Re: To buy a starter home or not?
I don't think we're ever going to move, but you never know. Our house is big enough right now for us to grow into it. We had talked about buying a co-op/condo but my fear was getting stuck there. My parents bought a condo right before they were married and that's where I grew up. My parents always wanted a house, but it just couldnt' happen financially for them. This was my fear so we didn't go with a starter home.

Re: To buy a starter home or not?
FH and I are currently looking for a house that will allow for growth just in case we would like to raise a family there..., we are looking for something that has space thats not totally a dump but doesnt have to be 100% either that we can fix up over time.. this way if we want to improve we can, and there is room to grow w/ a family. good luck!

"what happens if you find something in a phenomenal neighborhood (just saw a wantagh woods listing for a 2BR for 359K) that you don't want to leave, you'd rather take your savings and expand? "
My point in this was if i got an opportunity to buy in wantagh woods... i ain't leavin. expanding my starter would be MY choice. But, i would know that going into the deal.

I personally would never buy a 2br house. It will be a difficult sell.
i dont agree here, there are plenty of "down-sizers" and "just beginngers" also plenty who dont plan to have kids. If its in a good area, I think a 2 bedroom is a great investment!
you can also expand!

Re: To buy a starter home or not?
We bought a starter home... BIG mistake. It is one bedroom and very small.. Basically like a condo with a yard. We bought it during a time when the real estate was booming.
Fast Foward to now. We own 400 on it and it is valued at 250.
We have a baby. We are stuck. No equity to expand and no way to sell. We can afford it so we can't short sell.. We are just stuck.. Waiting for a day when the market magically turns around.
Unless it has enough room to stay in for a while if need be. Don't do it. JMO.
The good thing about our is that we are in an excellent neighborhood and and excellent Sd. So at least we have that going for us
