WWYD - re: IUI tomorrow and BDing - UPDATE below

This month we are doing an IUI based on my own cycle (since I have a cyst from Clomid last month). I was told to test with OPKs and then come in the day after the surge for the insemination.

I got my positive OPK this morning (8 a.m.) and the IUI is scheduled for tomorrow around 1 pm. That's 27 hours after the +OPK. Since I can technically ovulate between 12 and 36 hours after the positive, I am now all worried that we are going to miss the boat. I spoke to a nurse at the RE's office, and there is no other choice than to do the IUI tomorrow at 1.

My question is: Do you think DH and I should BD tonight? I am sooo worried that we will completely miss this if we wait till tomorrow. I asked the nurse, and she agreed that it's totally a catch-22 with wanting the optimal sample from DH for tomorrow, but at the same time, there *is* a risk of missing my O.

I agree with the nurse. It is a catch 22 situation. I had the same dilemma when I had couple of my IUIs. One time we took a chance and bd'd the day before IUI. His count was fine the next day. If your DH usually has good count, If you can I would BD this morning right away, so that he has about 24 hours before he has to provide another sample. Good luck!

if your DH has a good count i would BD today if you can as soon as possible, that way it's there if you O early. but you're also giving almost 24 hours for him to recharge - which should be enough time for a good sample for tomorrow if theres no specific issues.

I agree with the above posts, especially if your DH's count is good. If his count is not the greatest, will your doctor do a second IUI? My DH's numbers were on the lower end for a few cycles, and we came in on two consecutive days. Also, although BD might reduce the count somewhat, the more often you do it, the higher quality sperm you will have. The "junk" gets cleared out! That is why when doing an SE they don't want the duration between deposits to be too short or too long. I don't think it can really hurt, so I say have fun and go for it! Good Luck!

DH and I decided to BD this morning, which gives DH about 22 hours to 'recharge'. He had a great count the last time we did IUI, so hopefully his #s will be good again tomorrow.

I hope this works out for you! I think BD'ing yesterday was a good choice. That egg takes some time to travel, so I think you'll be ok.

Update:
Well it's a good thing we BD'd! I went in today for the IUI and didn't have it done till 2:15 (waited for over an hour ).

The good news is that our BDing yesterday didn't seem to have any drastic affect on DH's sperm count today, so there was plenty of that. But, as I feared, the egg was gone by the time of the insemination.

We'll see what happens next month - could be a Clomid cycle, so this whole sorta thing wouldn't happen (with a trigger shot, it's a lot easier to predict timing of O). But, let's hope there ISN'T a next month to even worry about.

Hopefully it will all work out. That little egg can survive for quite a few hours, you may have hit your window w/ either the BD or the IUI. Good Luck!!!!!!

Good luck with this cycle...it would be so wonderful if you were able to conceive naturally after all of this!
