Leaky Ceiling
When we first viewed our home we saw in the office downstairs that the ceiling had some staining and some damage from water...there were two round stains and then a strip of damaged sheetrock where you could see the seam on the ceiling was coming apart...during inspection the inspector poked around the area and said that everything was dry - we bought our home as a short sale so it was sold "as is" so we couldn't go to the seller or seller's bank for the repair....the seller hadn't been occupying the property for awhile and said they didn't know about the damaged ceiling or any leaks....
we have been here since september and the ceiling showed no change....we planned on having it repaired eventually but figured it was a leak that had to do with maybe the upstairs bathroom (which we haven't used the tub or shower up there yet)
ffwd to this week....we've had a ton of rain and the ceiling was damp and got darker - so now we know it has to do with water getting in from outside...i guess it could be from the roof or the upstairs window?
we are supposed to have a drywall guy coming tomorrow for an estimate - but we won't know what we are dealing with until the ceiling is removed...
did anyone deal with a leak like this? i am nervous b/c we don't know the actual source of the leak and how bad the damage might be inside the ceiling

Re: Leaky Ceiling
I had a leak issue too. I would rip open the ceiling and do some experimenting. First try the toilet, then sink then shower. Then run any other water upstairs one by one in case it is any connecting piping. Be sure to run both hot and cold. If that doesn't cause a leak try spraying the house with the hose. Start low and go up. finish with the roof in case it is running down the wall from the roof. good luck leaks suck

Re: Leaky Ceiling
we had a leak issue for months, only when it rained a certain way... turns out it was the through the wall a/c unit in the bedroom upstairs... the person who installed it did not install it correctly and there was a HUGE gap between the siding and the a/c... once dh climbed up there and fixed it we were in the clear
