Please help..
We adopted 2 year old Benny from a shelter last week. He was neutered and microchipped and came home with us on Wednesday, the vet told us he had a cough which was either kennel cough or irritation from the intubation from being neutered. However, he coughed all night and was so sleepy on Wednesday. DH brought him back to the vet on Thursday and they said he had the canine flu, and the shelter is known to have sick dogs like this. Anyway, he is on two different types of meds, but he does not seem to get much better. He is completely lethargic, and has a hard time keeping his eyes open and barely has the energy to jump onto the bed or couch., Every time he drinks or exerts himself in the smallest amount he starts to hack up phlegm (but never completely throws up). On top of that he has a thick yellow mucus coming out of his nose constantly. When will this get better?! If you made it this far, thank you.. im just scared he is not going to get better!

Re: Please help..
my dog was spayed on Thursday and she is still a bit on the lethargic side - so it could be the neutering. Also, our friend's boxer had an upper respiratory infection when it was a puppy and it took a good 2 weeks for her to feel better.

Re: Please help..
hmm... are you sure its not kennel cough? kennel cough is SOOOO common among dogs that come from shelters... hershey had kennel cough when we first got him & it took a good 2 weeks of antibiotics for him to be 100%
did they put him on clavomax?

Re: Please help..
Animals are very prone to getting illnesses like flu or pnemonia after they are spayed or neutered. This happened to our second puppy and it was defintey scary to watch our crazy puppy just lay there not wanting to get up or eat, but just give the dog a few days to recoverer, their bodies are so stressed they get so exhausted. If it doesn't get better I would def. go back to the vet or another vet if you think it was a misdiagnosis.
