Recommend your heart rate monitor

and explain to me how they work.

I'm looking for a heart rate monitor watch and I'm seeing that they come with a chest strap.

Do you need to wear the chest strap and then the watch gives you the reading?

I was kinda hoping it was just a watch. . . .
