Dog owners. Question

If I was to adopt a 10 month old small dog from a friend of a friend, and he is not totally housebroken. is it to late to teach him?
Thanks.

Re: Dog owners. Question

its never too late to housebreak a dog. its all about consistency. I would highly recommend a crate and no water at night.

good luck!

Re: Dog owners. Question

Never too late! We trained ours at 9 months. What worked for us were bells that he touched when he needed to go out, and a rock-solid schedule. Currently, 6am, 11:30am and 7pm are his walk times and we haven't had an accident in almost a year.

What kind of dog? Congrats. Chat Icon

Re: Dog owners. Question

No, but I do think you would have an easier time teaching a younger dog. My dog was 10-12 months old when we got him. He was housetrained but there were aspects of his personality that were ingrained by then, especially because he didn't come from a happy situation. I do not mean to discourage you at all and I love my dog even though he was not with me when he was a very young puppy.

Re: Dog owners. Question

Not too late at all. We got our dog when he was about a year old and he was not housebroken at all. We started with making sure he went out as frequently as possible, tons of praise and treats and lots of walks---he was never even on a leash when we got him initially and now he loves to go for walks all the time! Good Luck!
