I dyed at home, and I think I did something wrong, can you help me?

So I have been getting highlights for awhile. My hair is a dirty blonde color naturally. If it wasn't so blahh I wouldn't even highlight. Trying to save a little I figured I would try to dye my hair a color closer to my natural color, and then depending on how I liked it, either continue to dye at home, or dye it completely back to a color very close to my natural color.

So I had about 3/4" root. I tried to get a color a shade or 2 lighter then my roots. Took it home, followed the instructions exactly (used permant dye)
and washed it out.

I began freaking out about 10 mins in because the dye turned bright orange. DH and I were laughing, that I would have to go to work the next morning looking like a pumpkin.

Anyway, my hair came out great, except for my roots! There not orange, but they aren't the blonde that the rest of my hair is. they are a strawberry blonde color. The parts that have the highlights left in them, are a normal blonde color, just like the box.

What the heck do I do???

my options:
Get another box, of a lighter color and dye again

just go darker and cover it all up

seek professional help

I'm nervous to dye it again, thinking my hair is going to fall out! Help!!!

Honestly I would probably go back to the salon and get it corrected unless you want to go darker but i wouldn't buy another box of a lighter color and dye it again

you can wait - i think it's 2 weeks i think but i am not sure - and do it again, just on your roots.

it sounds like you didn't go light enough, but because your hair was already processed, it took the color better than the part of your hair that wasn't processed. either that or you should have put the color on just your roots first for the required amount of time then put it on the rest of your hair for a shorter amount of time.

the hotline number on the box is great - they are usually very knowledgeable and helpful.

you know I was thinking I didn't leave it on long enough too. it said 25-45 mins depending on how light I needed to go. so i did about 30-33 mins. it was turning os orange I was afraid to leave it on to much longer. I threw the box away already. so so you think if I bight the root touch up kit, in the same color and left it on awhile longer it would work/ Or I should wait a little longer... I feel like its getting brighter red by the dayChat Icon

i am torn - i would want to use the root touch up kit ASAP too but i'd be afraid of my hair falling out or something Chat Icon

like i said - call the # on the box. they'll let you know how soon you can use it safely.

good luck! Chat Icon

Heather-seek professional help. You don't want to mess with fixing it because you can damage your hair.

At this point I would go to a salon and explain what happened.

I dye my hair at home but used to go to a salon (I got tired of paying salon prices to get the same color I can get from a $10 box of dye used in the comfort of my own home). But if I ever had an accident I would definitely consult a pro.

if you want to save $$ in the future, i would go to a salon and have them dye it one color- close to your natural and then dye it as necessary close your natural color at home. but to correct this and to get all the blonde out, i would go to a pro.

the color changin means that ist activating. I do my hair at home for years & years . I never base it on the color as it changes.. You probably didnt leave it on long enough , the roots are always the stubborn to color as its like vigin hair . KWIM? . Id hold off on doing it for about 3 weeks , if your could, you dont want breakage. Int he meantime get shampoo for it , shimmer lights is great for getting rid of the red brassy tones.. Get the purple one ( again color doenst matter) it will tone donw the brassiness
