Re: buttercream frosting
1 cup butter, softened 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 4 cups confectioners' sugar 2 tablespoons milk
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and vanilla. Blend in the sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the milk, and continue mixing until light and fluffy. Keep icing covered until ready to decorate

Re: buttercream frosting
I like the Magnolia type recipe, but I also have done a nice Swiss buttercream where you do a meringue.
My advice is to look on youtube. Lots of people do cake decorating, frosting tutorials. They are super helpful

Re: buttercream frosting
This was really good but I made it a long time ago, I'm pretty sure I cut the recipe in half:
Soft Buttercream Icing Ingredients: 4 oz hot water 1 tsp salt 1 tsp lemon flavoring 1tsp almond flavoring 2 tsp vanilla flavoring 9 cups confectioners sugar 3 1/2 cups crisco 1/2 cup butter 2 oz evaporated milk (not sweetened condensed)
Directions: -Dissolve the salt in the hot water -Add the lemon, almond, vanilla flavorings and the confectioners sugar -mix in your mixer for 1 minute, scrape the sides of the bowl -Add crisco (a bit at a time) and the butter and the evaporated milk -mix in the mixer for 8-10 minutes on low to medium speed *in really hot weather add 1/4 cup cornstarch to the sugar*

Re: buttercream frosting
1 cup of butter (2 4oz. sticks) 1/8 tsp. salt 2 1/2 cups of confectioner's sugar (sifted) 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract 1/2 tsp. milk
Beat the butter until fluffy (about 2 minutes). Add salt. Slowly incorporate the confectioner's sugar (and make sure you scrape the bowl to get all of it mixed in). Add the vanilla and the milk... VOILA! when you're finished... lick the bowl clean (just kidding!)
also, make sure you don't overmix it.... it's supposed to be nice and thick!
