how to estimate how big your puppy will get

when we first got hershey, he was 12 weeks old... the vet said that when he's 6 months old, double his weight and thats what he's going to weight when he's full grown

if we went by that, that would mean that he would only be about 55-60 pounds... which i feel is pretty small for a lab Chat Icon unless hes the runt of the litter?? (he is also a lab mix)

i was wondering how accurate this is & if anyone has heard of this

also -- at what age are they said to be the weight they will be for the rest of their lives?

I honestly don't know how to estimate weight but I will tell you that Brinkley is only 60 pounds and he's pretty much done growing! And he's pure Lab, so you never know, you might have a little guy too. Chat Icon

He's always going to look like a puppy, which is just fine with me. My little chocolate boy. Chat Icon

Wow, see now Kasey is at the other end of the weight spectrum for a lab. We took her to the vet last weekend and she's up to 74 lbs!!! Not overweight but she's a big girl. I think the chart said 55-75 was a good weight for labs; so Hershey may be on the small side but it's still a healthy weight.

He's squarish and compact so he looks big in pics

But check him out in comparison to me... I'm 5'10"

He was about 75 when we got him, too weighty, especially when they're growing the vet says. So he was down to 58 and we got him back up between 60 and 65, which is good for him. You can feel his ribs but not see them.

I think Hershey is probably fine! No reason why a shorter stature dog can't be a good watchdog. We're encouraging Brinkley to bark when he hears noises out front and people coming to to door. Chat Icon

Re: how to estimate how big your puppy will get

my sister has a yellow lab

rut of the litter- female

the breeder estimated her adult size and weight based on the parents - about 60

she is not even 1 year and already close to what they said the full grown size would be

basically- my point- I don't think anyone knows!

him and Brinkley look to be about the same size now that i see a pic of you and him together lol.... i think Brinkley is a bit boarder than hershey... like, if he was a man, he would have broader shoulders -- if that makes any sense haha

yeah we also encourage hershey to bark at all noises!! he is a great watch dog Chat Icon

Re: how to estimate how big your puppy will get

It makes total sense, because the broadness is intentional! I never saw differences in Labs until I started looking for one. Show dogs are bred specifically to be blocky with squarish features. Field dogs aren't bred with aesthetics in mind but for drive so they tend to have longer noses and be taller with a higher energy. Brinkley's line is full of blockheads. Chat Icon

Now that I see the "look", I really like it. Pitts, Rotties and Boxers have a similar physique. Chat Icon

just wanted to chime in and tell you that my in-laws have a chocolate lab that weighs 140!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon He is not even "fat", just bulit huge and solid!!

Also, we have a black lab mix and our vet told us the same thing about the 6 months old weight can determine how big they will be full grown. Although our little girl weighed about 45 then and she is now about 65/70 and seems to be full grown. but I guess she still has time to "fill out" lol

Re: how to estimate how big your puppy will get

Not sure how big Ali (who is a black lab/beagle mutt but looks mostly like a black lab) weighed at that age, but she's 10 now and weighs about 90 which the vet says is a healthy weight for her. She's pretty barrel chested but she's not overweight at all--she was up to 100 last year but has lost 10 lbs and is now in a good place Chat Icon

this is Ali:
