What is the maximum amount of $$ you would spend....
on art or some sort of wall decor?
We have decent size wall space, about 10' by 5', that we need to get something for. I'd like to get something substantial for that space, as its going to be the centerpiece of the living room, but I have no idea what our budget should be.
any thoughts?

See.. i'm wary of spending tons of $$ on something because i know that i may want to change it out in a year or so. I'm always looking to re-arrange artwork or furniture so i'd be hesitant of spending a lot of money and being stuck with something permenantly.
I think the most we spent so far was $250 on a picture above a sofa.
Perhaps you could do several framed pieces of art or photography that you could repurpose the frames and change the images out if you get bored of them.

The picture over my sofa that's about 4' wide & 3' tall was approx $300 for the print & frame. I'd at least double that for something substantial to cover that much space. So maybe I would budget $600-800 and hope to find something for less.

I don't think you can really put a number on it especially if you don't know what you want.
I think it depends on what you want to spend and what your budget is. You can find stuff for many different prices and styles.

I agree! I have an expensive piece of artwork in my LR, but to me I was in love with it and was worth the investment.
You can find prints for so cheap and just have them framed or you can buy expensive Art, it's endless.

i agree. and if i found something that i absolutely loved and it was expensive, I might just get it b/c I really loved it. hard to say in the abstract.
are you crafty at all? on an HGTV show i saw a few weeks ago, they got blank canvases at an art store and then stretched patterned wall paper over the canvases and matched up the pattern on each and had a gorgeous 3 canvas spread for less than $100.
