Golden Retriever
Am I going to get flamed for this??
We are looking for a reputable Golden Retriever breeder. Dh and I have decided to get a puppy for our kids and we have our heart set on a Golden. They are next to impossible to find as puppies at the shelters, etc. Thanks : )

Re: Golden Retriever
there is nothing wrong with getting the dog you want. You can get info on reputable breeders on the american kennel club website.
Just be aware of where you purchase to ensure it is not a puppy mill. If someone can back me up on this - I am pretty sure that NO reputable breeder will put their dog on a plane and ship them across the country so that is usually a sign that it is a puppy mill. And you should stay away from pet stores too!
GL - I had a golden growing up and she was THE BEST DOG! I still miss her and she passed away 13 yrs ago!

Re: Golden Retriever
Rescuing an animal is admirable and there's a certain pride that goes along with it. Rightly so.
However, sometimes that pride manifests itself in judgment of others who do not do as they do. To me, it cancels out the good deed when people criticize those who make different choices. I can respect anyone who makes a responsible choice, whether that be adopting, rescuing, or purchasing from reputable sources.
Only you know what is best for your situation, do not feel bad about that. I believe a responsible purchaser will do as much research as they can before they buy, though. Not only on the place you get the dog from, but how well that dog will fit into the next 15 years of their lives with you.
There is a lot of information out there on what makes a reputable breeder, so that we don't further the problem of irresponsible backyard breeding. I'm afraid I don't know any good Golden breeders, only Labrador breeders. Good luck with your search for your new family member.

Re: Golden Retriever
this place seems to follow all the rules about being a reputable breeder!
- they dont breed more than 2 dogs - the have a signed contract about ensuring the dog sees a vet within a certain amount of time - they require you to notify them if the puppy gets sick

Re: Golden Retriever
I love Golden's. We have one and were considering a few months ago to get another...but put it on hold.
I had found this great breeder when I was looking. They are in NJ.

Re: Golden Retriever
We just bought a beautiful golden retriever puppy last Tuesday from a breeder in Dingman's Ferry, PA (Poconos). The breeder has been wonderful in giving lots of follow-up help. We're having some potty-training difficulties and she is there for us every step of the way. The dogs at her home are totally socialized with her family and when you get your 8-week old puppy it is very friendly and good with people. I have 3 kids, including a 1 year old, and the puppy is fantastic with them. We named her Ruby Tuesday - she's a beauty! I really wanted to rescue a golden retriever dog but ran into a lot of difficulty - the groups I dealt with (including L.I. Golden Retriever Rescue) said that they would have a very hard time finding a dog to give to a family with a baby. Even a breeder I wanted to buy from in Massapequa said to call her back in 4 years! I highly recommend Sandy at Golden Acres Farms: www.gafarms.bizland.com.

Re: Golden Retriever
only thing is that they breed more than 1 breed. reputable breeders dedicate their lives to one breed. not saying its a puppy mil but looks like a byb to me

i read in an article, i think the one i posted above that up to 2 breeds are okay. anymore than that should send up the red flags

Re: Golden Retriever
this website is one of the best... better than the akc because the akc still gets some byb/pm's slip through the cracks.

Reputable breeders may breed up to 2 breeds. It becomes more suspicious if the breeder were to change breeds than to stick with the same two. This place is definitely not a puppy mill, the breeder, Cheryl, really knows her stuff and seems to literally make her life about these puppies.
