American Eskimo

We are looking to get a puppy. I am torn between getting an American Eskimo or a Shetland Sheepdog. I have always had a Sheltie growing up. My DH has his heart set on American Eskimo. I know how sheltie's are with children and they are excellent. I have read up on American Eskimo's and I have read that they are also good. Does anyone have any input that can help me make up my mind? TIA

Re: American Eskimo

are the American Eskimos the white fluffy ones? If so my cousin has one - they use them a lot in circuses because they tend to be excellent jumpers. Her dog can jump five feet straight up from a standing position. Her dog is very hyper.

Re: American Eskimo

when they shed you want to kill yourself. you have to be ready to brush them constatly.

my parents have one (well we think he is mixed with white shepard - not sure) but he has the long fur and the hair falls out in clumps. not to mention he is grumpy and doesnt like getting brushed.

check what their temperment is because my parents is a bad boy growls and is nasty

Re: American Eskimo

as much as i love and adore my american eskimo, i wouldn't suggest the breed for a family with children. by no means is he aggressive towards kids but he is just very moody! even before DS was born and it was just the doggie he was moody and very needy. he also barks a lot which is not fun with kids.

all that said, i still love him dearly and he does do some adorable things.....he goes swimming in our pool almost every day and he listens outside very well -- he can stay in the front yard and won't run or even go off the grass.

Re: American Eskimo

just be prepared for the hair!! both breeds are ridiculous shedders and do take the cost of grooming every 8 weeks into consideration
