need some cat feeding advice...

ok so im going to make this long story as short as i can....

i've only had Miller for about a year -- when i got him, he was a plump 17 pounds. about 4 months ago, i changed his food and started feeding him what a 10 pound cat should be eating (as directed to by my vet).... i was feeding him 1/4 cup of food in the AM and 1/4 cup of food for dinner. it took him a while to adjust to the new eating situation (mainly b/c before that, i had him on an automatic feeder) but after a while, he adjusted and ended up loosing 2 pounds!!

SO he started having diarrea on and off about a week after i switched his food. after doing some research, i found out that too many grains can cause diarrea. so about 2-3 weeks ago i switched him AGAIN to a senior food formula and he has been doing great on it!

HOWEVER for the past week and a half, he has been acting like he is STARVING and bugs me the SECOND i walk in the door from work. meows in my face until dinner time (5pm). AND in the mornings, i usually feed him at 7am -- but the past week and a half, i've gotten up around 6 to feed him b/c he will just not stop meowing! THIS MORNING i had to feed him a tiny bit around 4am b/c he would not stop meowing.

IN ADDITION, i took him to the vet for his yearly shots and he GAINED a pound! i dont know what is going on b/c i have been feeding him the same amount for the past 4 months!! i also dont know why all of a suddon he is acting like we starve him

if you got this far, thank you! any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Chat Icon

Re: need some cat feeding advice...

Is all the food gone when he is meowing?

My cat begs for food like clockwork when she knows it is feeding time even though there is food in her dish. I pretend to feed her and she is happy. She just likes the whole feeding action.

If it is a time when there is no food in her dish and it isn't feeding time, I give her a little and she is happy. Then I feed her properly when it is actually her feeding time. She is a grazer. Is your cat a grazer?

yes my cat is def a grazer

when he begs for food, there is nothing in his bowl... i started doing exactly what you said -- give him a little bit when he starts to beg and then when its meal time, give him the actual serving amount... however im scared to keep doing this b/c im trying to have him loose weight!
