putting my dog down

we have a 12 yr old retriever and he's on his last leg- he's lost a lot of weight and seems so sad everyday. he is leaking urine and doesn't realize it. Chat Icon my husband is miserable, but he knows it's what's best for our doggie...

so....

a- where should i take him?
b- how much will it cost?
c- do we have to bury him?
d- what can we do to make this process easier?

thanks in advance

I know how hard it is to put a pet to sleep. Are you sure that nothing can be done to help him? Have you talked to your vet about the problems he is having?

SO SORRY Chat Icon
My almost 17 year old Gizmo was put to sleep in December. We brought him to his regular vet. I don't remember the exact cost but it was around $300-400 for everything (including cremation). We did not bury him, we had him cremated. I kept the ashes on my nightstand until my mom passed away, and now he is entombed with her in her coffin. There is nothing to make it easier. I cried for weeks and even now (6 months later) I still cry when I see some pics/videos or think about certain memories.

Re: putting my dog down

I'm so sorry you are going through this.
Nothing will make it easier... it really is one of the hardest parts of life.

I don't know how much it will cost- as my cat died naturallly without needing to be put down, but I can answer your question about burial.

They will give you a choice- you can take the body home to bury, you can have a private cremation where you will get the ashes back or a group cremation where they do the creamation with other animals and you won't get the ashes back.
The group creamation is the cheaper option- other than burial in which case there is no charge as you are taking the body with you.

In the meantime, here are some prayers for you and your hubby..

Re: putting my dog down

If you are interested, my MIL had a vet that came to her house.

When the unfortunate time came to put down my their dog Ally, she was laid to rest right in her own home, surrounded by everyone who loved her very much.

She was then burried in her favorite blanket in the back yard as they had done with all their other pets.

If you're interested in taking this route, let me know and I will get you the vet's number. He was so great, especially during such a hard time.

I'm so sorry for your pooch... Chat Icon
