Kennel Question-Vacation related

So, this is my first puppy and I am foreshadowing how hard it would be to leave her at a kennel if I go away this summer for a week +. How safe are kennels? Am I crazy to consider staying home so my baby, who is more like a baby to me than a puppy, doesn't have to feel isolated and abandoned?

You puppy will need all there shots before going into a kennel. For us personally I could never put Otis in that situation. we are lucky enough that we have my parents his Grandparents LOL

Re: Kennel Question-Vacation related

We visited a well known and well recommended kennel and decided to do a dog sitter instead. She called us every night to tell us how he was doing, and that made us feel a lot better.

Our dog is like our baby too (shih tzu also!)

We totally go out of our way for her when we're on vacation.

We have gone to San Francisco and just take her with us... or my mom (flight attendant) has flown here to San Diego to pick her up and take her back to NY to stay with my parents... OR this summer we're gonig to Rome, so we're flying from SAN -> JFK so we can drop our dog off with my parents before leaving for Rome.

Kennels make me super uncomfortable! I want my little lovie to be loved and well taken-care of. As PP mentioned, I'd probabyl feel much better with a dog sitter!

We've left Cooper at kennels before and we felt very comfortable. Of course we started off leaving him for just short periods of time (just a night or two to start).

The longest we've ever left him was just over a week. It was torture for us but he did great. We've never been given a reason NOT to trust the people we rely on to look after our furbaby.
