New Homeowners .....
It just occurred to me that DH and I are going to need to buy a lot of stuff for our new home. I am not just talking about furniture or picture frames here, but things like
Garbage Cans A Lawnmower and a Rake Snow Shovels, etc.
What else do you all think we are going to need? We are moving from an apartment to a house, so we don't have much because we never had to do any maintenance!
This is going to cost us a fortune, right?

Re: New Homeowners .....
Sorry to break it to you, but yes, it's going to cost a fortune. DH and I moved from each of our parent's house last year and it's amazing the things you don't realize you need, but don't have! I'm talking things like light bulbs, Neosporin, certain spices, a lawn edger/mower and big things like that, a hand shovel to plant, a mop to use....anything! It all adds up...look for sales and use coupons! It's your best bet :)

Re: New Homeowners .....
yea unfortunately whenever you move there are always little expenses like that that can add up- like pp said just do it a little at a time- also see if family has duplicates of anything- my mom gave us a bunch of gardening tools and my aunt was redoing her kitchen so we also got a lot from her
also now is gargage sale season- you can probably pick up a lot of what you need for really cheap that way
good luck and congrats on your new home!

Re: New Homeowners .....
We are closing on our home next friday and moving from an apartment in Manhattan. Prior to living here I had a house and got rid of all the things I will now have to purchase again ! I am trying to make a list and prioritize what we need so that we don't go broke! I figured the most important things are garbage cans and a lawnmower ( I don't want the new neighbors to talk if our lawn is overgrown next is a BBQ and patio furniture so we can enjoy the summer!

If you hire a landscaper, you won't need as much. We were lucky that a lot of stuff above was left by the sellers.
You'll also need some more things if you have gardens to tend to. We inherited a lot of beautiful plantings and I've still trying to figure out how to care for them.

Buy the things you REALLY need/will use soon and then buy other things when you need to use them. Look at Big Lots right now for lots of landscaping tools. They are a lot cheaper. You can even pick up cleaning supplies there. Then of course look for sales in the papers or online. Target even has some landscape tools (rakes, shovels, brooms) right now. Not too expensive. Lots of luck in your new home.

Re: New Homeowners .....
You definitely need more things than you can probably think of or imagine right now.
We were very lucky that the previous owners left a few things and our parents had upgraded some of their lawn care items so we can use their old stuff for now.
Window treatments alone were enough to make me nuts - so many windows to cover! Never mind the tools for taking care of the yard!! Brooms, rakes, shovels, contractor size garbage bags, new doorknobs and/or locks, storage shelving for all this new stuff you need, painting supplies, lamps and light bulbs...
The list goes on and on but with a lot of these, you only have to buy them once and they should last you a long time!

We’re in the same boat—we just moved May 1. So far we have bought (rough list):
Lawn Mower Trash Can (outdoor) Shovel Metal Rake Garden Rake Wheelbarrow (some of this is b/c DH is putting in a paver patio) Push Broom Gardening Tools (for my Birthday ?) Patio dining set & umbrella Shower curtain/towels/etc. for 2nd Bathroom Welcome Mats for front & back door
Got from my parents (they had extra from my Grandpa’s House which just got sold): Hose Sprinklers Lawn Edger Sprinkler timer
Still need: SO MUCH! At least it feels that way!

Re: New Homeowners .....
all the outside items everyone is listing, is defin not neccessary if you have someone who does your lawn. I don't own any of those items, and the lawn company also does the snow removal, so no need for a shovel or snowblower. we have inground sprinklers, so no need to buy the timer for that.
old owner left garbage cans

two garbage pails rake lawnmower fertilizer spreader broom weed-whacker
Try to buy as you need them, don't go out and buy in one fell swoop... We did ours in dribs and drabs.

I agree about the lawn stuff. We have a landscaper so we don't touch it. I disagree about the snow removal simply because if they have several houses to clear and I need to leave, I'm not going to bust my @ss walking down my steps. So I do have a shovel.
