because I have bigger boobs (34D) one of the nurses suggested I roll up a receiving blanket and tuck it under the boob to give it better "lift" for the latch (which works).

Great tip as I am bigger!

Jaime... I know I'm hijacking your thread with a hundred questions but thank you again for this post! It's really triggered me to be more confident on BF! I'm going to the library to get some books today! Thanks! Chat Icon

Can we get some experienced BF moms to recommend...

-Books

-Bottles (best for supplementing/weaning)

-Pumps (hand, electric, double, brands)

Thanks!!! Chat Icon

Pretty soon I'm gonna end up starting a breastfeeding support thread!

A FANTASTIC online resource is kellymom Kellymom I can't tell you how many times I used it for information!

I used the Medela advanced pump and loved it. There's also this pretty good hands-free "bustier" that allows you to double pump (not until you get the hang of it and are more comfortable) and work at the same time - it looks bizarre, but incredibly helpful for working moms who pump at work and need to get work done at the same time Hands Free bra

I'd also suggest investing in some Lilly Padz - if you're like me, and have an overabundant supply and tend to leak, using pads not only feels icky, but is seriously wasteful. These are reusable - I bought two pairs and used them for the entire time I was BFIng Lily Padz

I used the Platex drop-ins for my DD because I heard the nipples were most similar to real BFing. Worked great for us...

LIF should make at least a BF board if one other special topic. This post is bringing up so many questions I have that I'm sure I'll get answered in classes.

Anyone do the skin to skin (feed as soon as baby gets cleaned and checked after delivery)?

Can you pump in the hospital or you don't start pumping until after the colostrum?

I didn't do the skin to skin. I ended up with a c-section. I tried to BF in the recovery room, but as soon as the nurses tried to help prop me up, I felt extremely nauseous. I didn't BF until several hours later. I didn't go into a room until after 5 p.m. on a Friday and the LCs were gone by that time. I didn't get any help until late afternoon on Saturday. DS wasn't latching correctly and had already bruised my nipples by then.

DS ended up in the NICU on Sunday b/c he had a high fever (likely due to dehydration). I worked with 4 LCs in the hospital. Once I started working with the LC in the NICU, she got me a hospital pump so I could help to get my milk in and build up my supply. I BF DS every 3 hours and then pumped for 15 minutes after that. I'd give DS the pumped BM at the next feeding. At first, I hardly got anything, but by the time I left the hospital, my milk had come in. The pump definitely helped although I wouldn't have used it under normal circumstances.

Re: some advice for you mommies to be...

I have thought about this more than once - I would really love to organize a little GTG - maybe starbucks or somethign like that with some veteran BF ladies from parenting and whomever on pg who wants to join - a support group if you will - an opportunity to ask questions of your peers, for us to share our experiences.

I am by no means an expert, but I know that the support of other moms on these boards has helped me get to where I am now (almost 10 months BF). I hoped to get to 6 months but when I first started I couldn't imagine getting to 6 wks - now I can't imagine stopping (but I do plan to Chat Icon ).

Anyway, would any of you ladies be interested in such a GTG? Would this be helpful to those of you considering BF, or on the fence about it?

I'm in Western Nassau and would have to do it on a weekend - or maybe even that Monday in February - President's Day?

Re: some advice for you mommies to be...

whenever is good for me, im home for now..saturdays work better then sundays though cause thats the only day my dh is home and we like to do family stuff that day..

that day (presidents day) works for me also, so maybe we could start a poll and see if there would be interest in this, what days are good for everyone and where we could do it..

i have to run to the dr, so i can either post when i get home later and do it, or if anyone interested reading this thread, or you caroline, want to start another thread for a BFing support group and see how much interest there is, that would be great!! lemme know!!
