Bothered - I think I am strange
I was with a friend in Nassau County today and we saw the cutest dog ever being walked. We talked to the owner and as I suspected, it was a Havanese puppy. The dog was ADORABLE and the owner seemed very nice - however, I am seeing and hearing about more and more people getting Havanese. I know this means that they are more popular but to me this is a huge negative. I think of more Havs in puppy mills, shelters, etc. I think I am odd but every time I hear of someone getting a Hav, I get a little sad that they are getting more well known.

You aren't strange...I feel the same way about Weimies. When we got Misty, they were like a foreign object...now I see more and more of them. And I know it's either the pet stores selling them or the shows on TV talking about them.

One of my friends has a Havanese, she got her from a breeder on Long Island.
She is adorable.

Re: Bothered - I think I am strange
I never thought of it that way.
I thought it was sad when buying little purebreed dogs became the trend, I thought of all the big dogs in shelters that wouldn't get homes.

I think the same way.....whenever a breed becomes more popular, somewhere in the back of my head I wonder how long it will take for a bunch to end up in shelters. I guess it is because we are so close to the reality of it all....

Re: Bothered - I think I am strange
I can totally see your point...hehehe, I definitely may feel like I "invaded" on that turf with you, but in all fairness, we adopted Maddy and she's not a puppy - LOL.
I honestly had never heard of the breed until Jessica (mikeandjess) introduced me to her Ollie, and then another client of mine introduced me to her Sophie.
I didn't remember the breed Ollie was, but after spending time with Sophie, and going out and doing some research on the breed, the Havanese were perfect for us.
It was most important that our rabbit got along with the dog, and vice-versa. Because they're a toy breed, they don't go after our rabbit...so hey, it's a strange reason why we were attracted to the breed...but it works for us.
think of it this way...you started a TREND!

This is honestly not directed at any one on LIF, just a general observation. When we got our first Hav 3 years ago, no one had ever heard of the breed.
I think Havs are the best dogs out there of course so I am happy when they go to good homes and people get to love and enjoy them - people like you and others on LIF. I love the breed and want others to love them. But in the dog world, popularity comes with a high price tag. It just makes me sad that they are increasingly coming out of puppy mills, sold in pet stores, etc.

I def. know you were not directing it towards anyone...trust me...I was being a bit kiddish.
It is VERY sad how dogs (and babies) tend to become a TREND.
Think of it this way - for every jerk out there that goes to a puppy mill / store - there are two more amazing people giving homes to those in the shelters.
and Havs are TOTALLY the BEST - hehehehe.

I think this is where my sentiment comes from. Fad & trend, IMO have no place with a living creature, especially one that is a committment of 15 + years. Like when there is a movie featuring a particular breed, all of a sudden you will see them all over pet stores, and people impulse buy them. In turn, the shelters become more crammed with said breed, because they were an impulse buy. Like when they did the live action 101 Dalmations....the shelters saw a significant increase in pure bred Dalmations between the age of weeks through to 2 years. They are not the easiest dogs to train, and can go deaf at a very young age. But because they are depicted as these great clever family dogs in the movie, people who do not research assume that is the reality for the whole breed.....
Anyway, off my soap-box for now

Re: Bothered - I think I am strange
I did not know there was a reputable breeder on LI for havs...and I really checked. Hope it wasn't the same guy I got Oreo from.
Anyway, my concern is that they will eventually become over-bred. Same thing happened w/ Golden Retrievers. My family owned Goldens since I was a baby and they got more and more over-bred as time went on, which can equal more health problems for the breed. One of the great things (and there are many) about havs is that they are not prone to many genetic disorders. Increase in demand and breeding may change that, which in turn will also increase the amount of havs in shelters and rescues too. I love my hav! They have the best tempterment and they really don't shed too, which a lot of people may find attractive. What concerns me is that they do require maintenance and people sometimes aren't ready for that.
Shanti, I totally hear you on this. When I got my hav, no one ever heard of them and it took a lot of research to even discover this breed.

Re: Bothered - I think I am strange
This is exactly my fear about Marley & Me coming out. It's supposed to be a cautionary tale with humor, and I've seen Josh Grogan's commercials about dogs in shelters that need rescue, but I think it will hurt the Lab breed in the interim.

I thought the same thing! In the book, one part that always sticks with me is when they made the half hearted attempt to give up Marley and the paper was filled with people giving away young male Labs for the same reason.

Re: Bothered - I think I am strange
I know what you mean. I love my shiba inus, and went to great lengths to do my research and find a reputable breeder from whom to get them. Now I've been seeing more and more at the dog parks, and most of their owners say they got them from pet stores - supply and demand working together, I guess. It breaks my heart
