1st RE Appt

What do they do at your 1st appt? Do they just meet w/ you or do they do any tests? Also, I may have AF then...does that matter?

Re: 1st RE Appt

My first RE appointment was close to 3 hours long:

They required my DH to be there as well, and to have all my records from my OBGYN prior to my appointment.

We first met with the RE himself. We discussed my medical history, DH's medical history. What we had been doing up to that point. And what course of action he was going to take initially with us. We also discussed how long we would do that course of action, what would follow if that didn't work, and any and all risks associated with fertility treatments.

I then had about 17 vials of blood taken plus a sono. If I hadn't already had a PAP that year, he would have done that as well. DH had blood taken as well, and given a script to have a SA done.

We then met with the nurse who would be handling my case. She explained how the office worked, etc.

Lastly we met with their financial department to talk aobut insurance, what was covered, not covered, etc.

Re: 1st RE Appt

I think it depends upon the office... My first appointment was an hour long. They took 5 vials of blood, called my insurance company to verify my IF benefits, took my medical history and DH's medical history (which is simple, so I gave it to them myself). We discussed what further tests I needed HSG/Water sono, I gave consent for genetic tests and we discussed the issues related to my previous ectopic pregnancy. They asked for copies of records from my OB/GYN and DH's primary (he has a thyroid condition).

DH wasn't with me, so he had to go back another day to give blood and submit a sample for a semen analysis.

Who is your RE? That might help us tell you what to expect at your first visit. I go to RSofNY; West Islip, mostly.

ETA: I don't think it matters if you have AF. In fact, if your appointment happens to fall on CD3, it may work to your advantage to get you started sooner. There is a blood test that they do on CD3 specifically to test the "age" of your ovaries, I believe. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong. It has been awhile since I started.)

Re: 1st RE Appt

I go to NSUH and my first appt. was similar to the experiences everyone else has had... The first part of the visit was getting my medical history and medical info. The Dr. also gave the the scripts I needed for CD3 bloodwork. Then I had an examination. I also had AF for my first appt. It didn't matter but of course it was past CD 3 so I had to wait a until my next AF cycle to have the bloodwork done.
That was basically it for me during my first appointment.

Lots of GL to you!!

Re: 1st RE Appt

Don't apologize for asking questions - that's what we're here for! I think I have learned more from the wonderful ladies on this board than I have from my RE. This is a great place for support.

Welcome. I hope your stay here is a short one.

ETA: Every one of us started out overwhelmed and still feels that way sometimes.

Re: 1st RE Appt

Don't apologize for asking questions!! I am new to the IF process as well and the girls here have been great in helping me figure stuff out. I did a lot of searches on this board too. Helped to familiarize myself with a lot of the IF lingo. :)

I had similar experiences for my 1st RE appt as others did. DH did not need to be there with me but he came anyway. Each RE is different regarding this. Some want DH there others don't. I was on CD3 so they took 5 vials of blood and did sono as well. DH had a SA done previously so I brought a copy of the lab results for the RE. I was scheduled for an HSG at that point as well.

I hope your stay here is short!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
