Baby Bargains is a great guide to use. It's a bit overwhelming so be prepared!!! I also bought the Consumer Reports book and used that as well for their safety ratings.

Re: how do you research baby products?
First off CONGRATULATIONS!!! You can look whenever you feel comfortable doing so. I started looking when I was well into my second trimester. I first started looking online at the BRU site, reading reviews there, seeing what ladies on this board recommended and figuring out what I liked. I also looked at some of my friends' registries to get an idea of what I would need. I didn't go to the actual BRU to register till I was about 22 weeks. I kept putting it off because it was so overwhelming for me. I did start the registry online before I even went to the store for some of the basic stuff and then completed it when I was there. I read parts of Baby Bargains and looked at Consumers Report a few days before I went and that was all. CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN MOMMY TO be!!!!

Re: how do you research baby products?
I use the Baby Bargains book too. I also ask questions or look at previous posts on here. There is a lot of great info on products right here from the LIF mommies. I also check out the Babies R Us and Amazon websites for reviews.
As for when to start, I am almost 14 weeks and I have been doing a little research each day or so since about 8 weeks. There is a ton of stuff out there and a lot of information so I think it is good to start early and do it in small doses.
