Unemployment
I know a few ladies on the board including myself have been laid off from their jobs as of late. I just got a notice from unemployment yesterday that there is a workshop that I have to attend or I will lose my benefits. I'm 9 months pregnant with GD and hypertension and it has become difficult to walk around or to stand. My mom is suggesting that I call tomorrow morning and explain to them the situation, but I have feeling that they will tell me to come down anyway. Just wondering if anyone had to deal with this situation or similar.

Re: Unemployment
I was called in for the workshop last year too. The DOL is really anal about you responding in a timely manner and will readily cut your unemployment benefits if you don't cooperate.
They are also very hard, if not impossible, to contact via phone. If you can call them first thing in the morning, do so, or else you'll likely hear a busy signal the rest of the day...
Good luck!

Re: Unemployment
You cannot call them, it says it right on the notice. It cannot be moved by phone.
You need to go down to the office and explain it to them. I had to go to that workshop in November and they said if you call or don't show you will be cut off.
For what it's worth, it was fairly painless and you sat the whole time

Re: Unemployment
Thanks for all of the advice. They have me scheduled to come in on Christmas Eve. I'm going on Tuesday to try and postpone it. I don't mind going, but right now I feel so uncomfortable. Who knows, by Christmas Eve, I could be in the hospital having the baby.

Re: Unemployment
I am going to have to do this soon as well.
Can you tell me how far after you filed were you called to come in?
I might be hitting it a bit close myself.
My one co worker filed on 11/17 and has to go in 12/17. Does this sound right to you?

I was laid off on Nov. 21st and had to file on Nov. 24th. I just got the letter on yesterday. So yeah a month from the day you filed seems right. But again, my former boss who also got laid off the same day as me, filed the same day and hasn't gotten the letter yet. Maybe it also goes in alphabetical order?

Thanks. Curious about the alphabetical thing. My last name begins with a T.

Re: Unemployment
Well I went down to unemployment today and it wasn't as bad as I thought. When I went up to the counter, I explained that I was 9 months pregnant and due soon. On the letter I got about the workshop, the woman told me to write that I'm about to give birth and mail it back. She said that I would be able to get disability. She gave me the # of the department of labor to call and warned me that its not easy to get through. She said to explain the situation and what steps I need to take. When I called, it was all automated and if I pressed 0 to get a person to talk to, they disconnected the call
Dealing with this just makes me more mad at my old job for doing this before the baby was born. Sometimes I wished they did it after I came back from maternity leave, so I wouldn't have to chasing my tail here.

Re: Unemployment
I just had to file for unemployment too. I lost my dental assistant job on Nov. 21st as well. They eliminated my position. The Maine Umemployement process is so complicated.....
No one will hire me pregnant, i have been turned down so much because I am pregnant it is depressing....
