i'm going to call uft (i will! eventually...), but does anyone know any specifics about maternity leave? i'm due on june 7 and i was HOPING to stop around may 15 (6 weeks before the last day of school) so i can get my full six weeks (plus i walk 1.5 miles to and then back from work and am constantly going up an down 4 BIG flights of stairs which i don't think is going to be very fun for me then. and i just want all my time off Chat Icon ) but i don't know if this is allowed since i won't be having the baby then, etc.

does anyone know if i can do this?

Maternity leave doesn't start until you have the baby. Up until that point you would just be using your sick time. I stopped working two weeks before I was due but my maternity leave didn't officially start until the day she was born.

I taught in NYC schools and I left before my daughter was born on FMLA. However, to go out prior to the birth there needs to be a medical reason and your OB needs to sign off on the FMLA form. After my FMLA was up I filed childcare leave papers. Also, call the UFT and speak to the disbility dept. You can collect short term disability while out on maternity leave. It's $350/wk and it's 8 weeks for a C-section and 6 weeks for a vaginal delivery.
