We're probably not allowed to do this, but I'm asking anyway...
So, about two months ago, we really thought we locked in at a great rate on oil. We're currently locked in at 3.70 a gallon. Not terrible, but not the best price right now, either. Anyway, I'm assuming I cannot call a place to do COD at the lower price since I have a contract, right? Like, I wouldn't fill my tank, maybe get half a tank and then when they come to fill my tank on the locked in price, they won't have to fill it as much. Does that make sense? That's probably really shady of me, right?

It's usually written in the contract that you sign that it's a violation and they can charge you fees and/or sue you if they find out.

Technically I don't think we are allowed to do this, but hubby and I were thinking of doing the same thing! it is just so expensive!

I wouldn't do it. It's not worth the risk. I'm sure these companies are on high alert with this stuff anyway- they don't want to lose money by being scammed.

they had a story on this on news12 last night..they were saying companies might allow you to do this and even if you have to pay a fee to change it, you still might make out better with the lower rate..it cant hurt to try to call..gl

I would just go to COD-screw the contract-I don't think you are "locked in" to a contract I thought it just guaranteed pricing for you..

Re: We're probably not allowed to do this, but I'm asking anyway...
I know plenty of people who do this, regularly. It's a definite violation of your contract, which ultimately causes increases in the consumer market, but I say go for it. You need to get the best deal for your family. But, as I learned from LIF the hard way, you should be careful about publicly posting your intent to breech a contract. There are varying degrees of severity, but the bottom line is that any breech of contract carries ethical implications. So far, your responses have been rather courteous though. Good Luck.

Thanks for all the responses. I spoke with my hubby and we decided that it just didn't sit well on our conscience to do this, so we're going to try to either buy out of our contract or renegotiate with them. Thanks everyone
