Licking Fetish

My shih-tzu Sadler has a licking obsession. He loves to lick anything that has just been moisturized like my legs, hands, face etc. He also enjoys licking my lab's ears...inside. Jacksons ears are clean so I don't know what he likes in there. It's so odd. He will jump over anything or anyone to get to Jackson. Once is he laying down he's all up in his ears. Jackson looks like he's enjoying it though. Just weird. Anyone else's pups like this?

My dog licks walls, shoes, tables, floors, anything. She licks my legs when I'm fresh out of the shower adn really enjoys licking my arms/hands. It's almost like she's grooming me.

My dog is so not a licker unless I have one particular moisturizer on then she goes nuts.. and she only licks Dh after he has been sweating.. But other than that she is not a big licker...

Licking can be an anxiety thing. The ear licking of your other dog is just grooming. My dog does this to my other

We had a licking situation when we first got our dog and when I looked into it, I found information that it can be a few things:

1. Submissiveness/anxiety - this was my Brinkley's case. He licked to "apologize" and kind of gain favor with people.

2. Dominance - possibly the situation with your other dog, they could be establishing the pack roles.

3. Smell - they smell something really good and are trying to taste it. Even if it doesn't taste good on the tongue, if it smells good, they'll keep trying. Licking ears of other dogs can mean a yeast infection, ear mites deep in the canal, or other problems.

If your Lab shakes their head at all, I'd probably get it checked out. My vet told me their ear canal is L-shaped so even if it looks clean, or you shove a cotton ball down there and it comes out clean, you can't reach the end of the canal where there could be schmutz. That's not a proper medical term.

My mom's shih tzu went through the same thing although his licking was limited to his paws and some of his toys. But it was non-stop! He wouldn't stop until his paws were soaking wet. We took him to the vet to see if there was something wrong, but the vet said everything was fine. And then one day he just stopped. I did meet another shih tzu owner who had the same problem though.

It must be a shih tzu thing. My shih tzu does the same thing, she will lick the couch, the bedpost, everything.

One of my rescue mixes does it too!! Constatly licking, his favorite is right when you get out of the shower he likes to lick the water off your legs and toes

Its sooooo annoying...

Same thing with me and my dog is 1/2 Shih Tzu, I am sure it's not a breed thing, just funny!

Barney does this too!!!!! He is a Golden and he licks EVERYTHING...........legs, feet, the rug, the wood floor, the sheets, the furnature.........EVERYTHING!!!!

I am so glad to hear that my dog is not the only one who does this!!!! It is so annoying!!!!!!
Milo - a long hair chihuahua - loves to lick and lick!!
He will lick his paws until they are soaking wet. He will lick me when I get out of the shower, especially after I put on lotion. He loves to lick our pillows and comforters on our beds. Now the new thing is for him to lick the remote controls. No matter how much we try to correct this behavior, he continues to do it over and over again!!!!! UGH!!!!
