NUMC
Hello! I would really like to work with the GAIA midwives but have heard negative things about NUMC. Not sure why. Any thoughts? Anyone give birth there?

Re: NUMC
I am using that practice. I had a very open discussion with susan about NUMC and things that I have heard. She was understanding and didn't pretend that those thoughts were not out there. But ultimetly you are under Gaia's care and using the midwife room.
After asking around a ltitle more, I heard great things about maternity and terrible things about the rest of the hospital.
My honest suggestion would be to talk them about it. I felt so much better after I did and I can't wait to go on my tour in a few months.

Re: NUMC
Thanks Tricia. I actually went on a tour and thought the birthing room is really nice. Of course there is only one and it is always possible that I would have to use the regular labor and delivery rooms (not so nice). What have you heard about post natal care or even maternal emergencies (god forbid). I am due in December and am switching real late cuz I just can't stand my OB's and the policies at north shore.

Re: NUMC
I haven't asked anyone since I m/c'ed last year... but, from what I remember, I heard that the maternity ward and post natal care is great and you can't be in a better place for emergencies. It's a trauma center. And Susan and Dale are so wonderful.
The bad things I have heard were more about going to ER when you don't have a trauma and getting no help. So, that doesn't worry me too much.

Re: NUMC
I was going to use Gaia as well. I had to change due to insurance. I was nervous about NUMC since my parents and other close family members have had terrible experiences there that I've witnessed. I had heard good things about the midwife room, but I learned because I'm a VBAC, I would be in the regular ward which I was none too happy with. However, Susan is wonderful (and I've heard great things about Dale too) so you would be in good hands either way.

Re: NUMC
I want to use Gaia as well, but b/c of health issues, I may not be eligible for a midwife. But I think they deliver at Huntington Hospital as well. Is that an option for you?

Re: NUMC
I used Gaia. Loved Dale!
They deliver out of NUMC and Huntington. They also do homebirths (which is what I had). Huntington is considering adding a birthing pool, you might want to ask about that.
I have heard only a few bad things about NUMC. I didn't choose to deliver there because I was uncomfortable after hearing another Mom's experience.

Re: NUMC
Unfortunately, I think Huntington is too far from me (this is my second baby). Stephanie- would you mind sharing what you heard that made you uncomfortable?
