Re: Walkers - Yay or Nay?

they def. are not as popular, but we registered for one. We're in a ranch, so I don't have to worry about stairs or anything. Plus, both my Moms asked like 8 times are we getting a good old fashion walker. Well nobody has purchased it off our registry, so we'll see

No, they're not recommended anymore for safety reasons so we're not. And we only in a one bdrom apt, no stairs at all. for us it's just not worth the risk.

Re: Walkers - Yay or Nay?

I see no issue with them. They are certainly not as "flmisy" as they were when I was kid in the 70's, and nothing bad ever happened to me or my siblings.

My sister used one with my nephew, she's a peditrician, and I figure if she had no problem with it, neither do I.

Re: Walkers - Yay or Nay?

They are NOT recomended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Not just because of stairs but babies can run into things and knock items over on themselves posing a dangerous threat as well. There have been nuerous reports of injuries caused by walkers.

Studies also show that they don't help a child to walk faster than a stationery exercising piece.

We wil not be getting one.

Nay! They aren't safe.

Yeah. They are.

What isn't safe is people who don't watch their children while they are in them! If they truly, TRULY were unsafe WHY would they still be on the market?!?

DS had one, he liked it for about a month and then got bored with it. We live on 1 floor, no stairs or anything and he was fine. It is a great thing and totally worth the $25 or so it costs at BRU!!

Nay for us - our ped made us promise we wouldn't buy one for DD b.c they are high risk for injuries (even with supervision). Baby bargains also doesn't recommend them - for safety and I think for developmental reasons. They are banned in Canada.

Some people have them - many don't I think it is a personal preference.

Safety issues and APA stance

It is not easy to pull something like this completely off the market, especially when you are dealing with multi million dollar companies. THe AAP for years has been lobbying Washington to have them pulled. In the hospital I worked at we so NUEROUS serious injuries every month caused by walkers, and these weren't negligent parents.

Its a personal decision that every parent makse just like bumpers, vaccination schedules etc. But you can't say "Yes, they are completely safe" when numerous legitimate organizations such as the AAP state they aren't.

Re: Walkers - Yay or Nay?

I went through this for my pregnancy...since my first child is 14 years old..a lot has changed..I was looking for a walker..and couldn't find one anywhere..than after speaking to some people..I find out that they don't sale them in the big stores anymore. So, I put on my register a jumperoo instead.

So Nay to the walker...

Don't plan on it for safety and space issues. Our home isn't all that big, and I can't stand clutter. However...knowing our families, i'm sure they'll each get us one thinking we forgot to register for it..lol Chat Icon

Nay- for safety reasons. I know I had one as a kid and loved it, but too much research shows they are dangerous. Baby Bargains scared me out of one.

Honestly, I bet many of those NUMEROUS injuries were b/c the parents were not watching their child and/or the child was in it too long.

And I guess IYO, I would be a bad parent b/c my son sleeps with bumpers, has had all his vaccinations on time and he is fine!

But as parents, we need to decide what WE want for our children.

I never said anythign about my views on bumpers or vaccinations. And I didn't say that I thought that parents who use walkers are bad parents.

All I said that the comment, "Yes, they are safe" is a bit harsh when so many organizations such as the AAP say otherwise............

I'm sure a bunch of those accidents are caused by parents who just throw their kids into the walkers and let them go loose. But I do know that some of those accidents were probably also cause by parents that watched their children very closely.

Re: Walkers - Yay or Nay?

I had one, because I have twins, so I got a walker and an excersaucer. The walker was nowhere near stairs, so they were aways safe in it.
