Re: Yay or NAy on pacifiers!

I will absolutely have them on hand, just in case. As other said, if she won't take them, one less thing to worry about later. But I don't see the problem with using them if they help keep her calm and satisfied.

Yay! I've breastfed 4 children and in my experience without a pacifier they tend to use you as one.

You really have no idea what will/won't work until you have a child.

My son took a pacifier - it was the only thing that soothed him at times - it was a godsend...then he got his first tooth and never took it again.

There are times when I wished he would take the pacifier back - believe me!!!

Bottom line...you can plan til you are blue in the face but you won't know til you have your child. I was dead set against them. The militant lactation consultants will tell you that the only thing that should go in a breast-fed child's mouth is the breastChat Icon . Yeah, ok. Um no sorry. I cannot put my nipple in Abby's mouth while putting her in the car seat to calm her down. (Though it would be interesting to see.) When she is screaming at the top of her lungs as the paint peels off the wall, I will give her a pacifier and deal with orthodontic or other issues later.

Completely true!! My sister has three kids and all of them where different. I plan on using a pacificer, but of course will see how it goes. The lactation consultants are so strict. They told my sister to never give one of my nieces a bottle in the beginning. My sister listened, even though she new better from her first child. When my sister finally introduced a bottle, she refused it. My sister tried everything. My sister couldn't work, go out really, or do much for a year. It was so hard on her.

I had them on hand but DS wanted nothing to do with them. DH and I were not pacifier babies which might have influenced some resistance towards using one.

I see nothing wrong with it but I prefered that my son didn't use one. I would do the same if we had another child - have them on hand but try not to use it.

It's a personal choice Chat Icon

My DS was not a big fan in the beginning, but began to use one at about 2 months. It really does soothe him and I don't know what I would do without it. I had to go through about 5 brands before I found the one he liked.

DS has been hooked since the day he was born. Chat Icon He is 5 months old now, his brother or sister will be here when he is 13 months. I would like to get him off of them before the baby comes but I'm not counting on it! I agree that it depends on the baby. My friend was desperate for her DD to take the pacifier, the kid refused.

Re: Yay or NAy on pacifiers!

Yay! It really helps soothe her and I didn't want her to become a thumb sucker. The paci you can throw out, the thumb is always there.

We are going to wean her when she 18 months-though I would like to make it through teething so it may be a little longer.

Every kid is different though-so it may or may not be an option.

Re: Yay or NAy on pacifiers!

I say Yay - I'd MUCH rather have to break the pacifier habit than the thumb sucking habit ........

Re: Yay or NAy on pacifiers!

We used one in the beginning, I wouldn't leave the house without one especailly for car rides!! Then, around 3 months she refused it and now she sucks her thumb only when she's going to sleep. I think its cute...I'm happy she can comfort herself. All I can do is hope she outgrows it.
