More Questions for Jewish Girls...

Did your Doc tell you to take the Jewish Genetic blood test? I had DH do it since I had so much blood already taken... as long as he's clear then I won't have to take it.

Also, I'm not having a shower (I know some Jewish girls do), but if you're not where are you keeping some baby stuff if you get it? I was thinking maybe my in-law's since my parent's are in NJ and too far. We don't want anything in the house till the baby is born.

I did have all of the genetics tests....better safe than sorry is my motto.

I did not have a shower, however all of the stuff that we did receive in advance was kept at my MIL's house. We are however starting to set up all her stuff now since she will be here in 10 days.

Oh... how exciting!! Yeah, I think we'll keep it at my in-law's as well since they live about 10 minutes away.

I just had to take the genetic test, and if you aren't a carrier for anything DH doesn't have to take it....

Yeah, DH took it so if he's clear then I won't have to take it.

Re: More Questions for Jewish Girls...

My RE ran all the Jewish Panel tests on my husband and I prior to allowing us to start fertility treatments. If we hadn't done it at the RE's my OB would have run the panel anyway. Better safe than sorry, IMO.

I am not having a shower either, I just don't want one, especially after all we went through and had to endure to even get pregnant. I'm much too superstious. I will also not bring anything baby related into the house until she is home with us. The only thing we are doing prior to her arrival is painting her room and that's it.

Re: More Questions for Jewish Girls...

I had all the genetic tests when I first started TTC. I know that DH's aunt is a carrier for Tay Sachs, but I found out I was not-- so there was no need for DH to get tested.

As for baby stuff-- well, I had some clothes that I got-- was able to take advantage of a crazy discount, and then some stuff that has been given to us. All that is at my mom's... but, I am going to be getting a bunch of stuff this weekend, and I will just keep it here.

At some point, practicality has to take over. We do not live close to our parents, and there is no where else to conveniently put it-- without schleping it out to LI, and then bringing it back.

I got tested as part of the full panel of initial screenings test. Technically/genetically I am only half-jewish as my mother was Lutheran before she married my father. I didn't think I would be a carrier and I tested negative. DH is catholic so he wasn't even tested.

I think I'm having a shower. To be honest I haven't spoken to my mother about it yet and I have a feeling she'll put up a fight but my bridesmaids and SIL really want to throw me one as I helped throw ALL of theirs. I'm hoping there's no battle over it. Chat Icon

Re: More Questions for Jewish Girls...

I'm Jewish, but DH isn't. I decided to have the genetic testing done anyway just in case. I had it done when we were thinking about TTC.

I'm having a shower although everything will stay at my parents' house. I ordered the bedding myself and that's sitting in a box by the door right now. I'm bringing it to my parents' house this weekend and my mom will wash it before the baby is born.

My parents live 2.5 hours away, but they will visit when I go into labor and at least a few times during the weeks after the baby is born. They'll bring the necessary baby items with them when they visit. The only thing I'll have before the baby is born is the car seat and extra base. I want to have it inspected before we start using it.

Re: More Questions for Jewish Girls...

I had the genetic testing done because my sister-in-law was a carrier for this rare Jewish disease. They tested to see if I had it before they even checked DH. Everything came back fine.

I am having a shower and we are keeping our gifts at my in-laws.

Hope this helps.

I had it and was not a carrier for anything. I know you had your DH take the test but maybe someone else can answer this question....should you still have the screening for Fragile X done? That's something that you can be a carrier for that he may possibly not be and even if he's not, that can still cause a problem.

Re: More Questions for Jewish Girls...

I got tested and was not a carrier so DH (who is not Jewish anyways) didn't have to take it.

As for the stuff, I kept most of the stuff in the garage. Just a little word of advice - if you are storing it at someone elses or your own house but not opening it just check to see if it is the right thing. My crib and changing table were set up when I was in the hospital and since my husband is not all there he didn't see that the crib was not the one we ordered! DS was born a month ago on Sat and we are finally getting the crib delivered tomorrow after fighting with BRU for a month!
