Got results from Vet

Took little Sushi to the vet since it was recommended by the shelter to be done within 7 days. She was very brave although her screaming when the vet took her blood nearly broke my heartChat Icon Got the results....she tested FIV positive.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon The vet did explain that it since she is only about 8 weeks old that she may have gotten the antibodies from her mom and it will never develop into FIV. I wasnt sure how DH would react with the news and whether he'd want to send her back but I told him that I picked her and I loved her already and couldnt send her "off." His reply? "Well of course not!!! She's ours and we will just keep her healthy and happy for as long as she is with us.Chat Icon We will get her re-tested when she is 6 months old. Chat Icon that she tests negative thenChat Icon

I have heard that they can live good lives despite being positive for FIV, the only thing I think is that you can't bring another cat into the house if I have that correct. Our Jenny was not FIV pos, but still never "all there" health wise, we knew she'd never be one of those that would live to see 20 years - we didn't have her whole history other than there was abuse and she was abnormally skiddish which took a lot of time and patience for her to even come around to us, although we never thought she'd pass away at around 6 years old, definitely not of kidney failure. After having her for about a year she really came around and we could pet her and she wouldn't run from us, as time went on she would greet us and you could see she trusted us and definitely loved DH and I - she did sit with us and even laid next to us in bed, although she was never a lap cat and you couldn't pick her up and she'd hide as soon as anyone came into the house. I will say from my own experience with "special needs" animals, while it is heartbreaking when they are ill and when they have to go, knowing that you gave them a happy life even if it's for a short time, with lots of love when the odds would have been against them - it helps you cope. A lot of people will not keep a special needs pet and often those are the one's that are put down well before their time - never given a chance at getting the love they deserve or giving the love in return they long to offer. As long as kitty is pain free and happy - enjoy your time together. May be the best years for all of you and take lots of pictures and spoil her with lots of love.

As clwp said, just because she is FIV positive doesn't mean she can't live a long life. It just means that you can't get another cat (unless it too if FIV positive). Apparently, if they are born with it, it's not so bad. But if they don't have it and are bitten or scratched by a cat that does, they can get very sick.

Enjoy your new baby and don't worry too much.Chat Icon
