Glucose test confusion

When I got the paperwork for the 1 hour glucose test, my doctor said I didn't have to fast, but I shouldn't eat or drink anything sugary within 1-2 hours of the test. Someone suggested calling the lab to make sure I didn't need to fast. I called Quest and spoke with a customer representative. She said my doctor should tell me what I need to do and that my doctor should have told me to fast. She said I could drink water though.

I plan to take it Saturday morning so it wouldn't be a problem to fast, but I was wondering what everyone did. Did you fast for the 1 hour test? Were you allowed to drink water before the test?

I didn't drink or eat anything before my test. I went early on a Saturday morning. (Make an appt for this at Quest so you are not waiting.)

They surprised me with my glucose test at my 25/26 week appointment. They asked if I had eaten breakfast, and I had just had a glass of chocolate milk on my way there, but nothing else. They did the test and I passed.

Re: Glucose test confusion

i was told nothing to eat or drink one hour prior to the test...the dr actually gave me a pamphlet about the glucose test and she said "the pamphlet says you don't need to fast, but i'm telling you to". i went with what the dr. suggested!

when my results came back everything was fine. i say follow your dr's instructions to the T Chat Icon

I asked my doctor's office if I needed to make an appointment and they said no. The one by me has never been busy, but I guess it couldn't hurt to make an appointment.

The only reason why I want to drink water before is that when I've gone there to get blood taken, they always have trouble finding a good vein. The first time, the woman lectured me about drinking a lot of water before giving blood b/c otherwise a person's veins get a lot smaller. No one had told me to drink water and I had bad m/s at the time. I ended up getting sick at Quest. Chat Icon I drank a lot of water the last time and they still had some trouble finding a vein. Chat Icon I just want to make the blood drawing process go as easily as possible.

Re: Glucose test confusion

I made the appt, only because it was busy at my quest on a Saturday morning. This is different than just giving blood though, you have to drink their glucose drink, wait an hour, THEN give blood. I know that you are not allowed to go to the bathroom or eat or drink while you are there. So if you drink an hour before, you might be doing the pee pee dance while waiting to give your blood.Chat Icon

That's very true. Good point. Hopefully the glucose drink will be enough to hydrate me.

Re: Glucose test confusion

I went 1st thing in the morning, my doctor instructed me to eat something I would normally eat in the morning, just don't have anything sweet like a donut, so I had a small english muffin with a scrambled egg. He explained it's best to eat to see how your body tolerates the sugar. Someone else also confirmed the same thing with me about eating before hand since I knew other people were told to fast.

P.S. Drink lots of water for your veins - it was only one tube of blood thankfully!

Either way it turns out I have GD. Good luck with the test!

I just got my sugar stuff at the OB yesterday and he does the GTT at his office- My instructions tell me I dont have to fast but to avoid sugary foods that day- I just can't eat after i take the sugar fluid - I guess they are all different !

Re: Glucose test confusion

My test was at 8:30 in the morning, and I was told not to eat anything after midnight the night before.

Definitely call your Dr. and ask. I thought everyone had to fast for this, but I'm seeing different answers across the board. Chat Icon
