Bfing and TEETH!!!!!!

HELP!!!!!
Sidney 2 front bottom teeth have broken thru and she keeps biting my nipples!!!! I cried out so loud today that I made her cry. What do I do? I've been pulling her off and saying NO! Doesn't seem to be working. She is 6 months old and I wanted to BF for atleast 1 year. I don't think I can keep this up as they are not even full teeth yet...just little buds. She only seems to do it if my supply is low. She gets very frustrated when the milk doesn't come right away.

NOT FUN!!!!! What do I do????
TIA

Re: Bfing and TEETH!!!!!!

The only thing that worked for me with both kids was as soon as they would bite I would take away the boob and say "NO BITE" and keep it out for a few seconds. They both got it, not right away of course but they begin to associate biting with their food source being taken away. Just keep that up, she will learn!!

La Leche league recommended pulling the baby in towards you, which makes it hard to breath for the baby which is uncomfortable so she is less likely to do it again. It also makes it less likely that you'll get hurt in the process of pulling her off, or making her think that its a fun game when you make a noise.

very sternly!!! You must let them know you mean business. Yes, you are going to startle them and they may cry but they get the point pretty quickly.

OK...so looking back at today - when i made Sidney cry I immediatley hugged and kissed her because I had never made her cry before. So I figure that I totally reinforced the biting Chat Icon

What do you do after they cry? Just put them back on the boob? or settle them down first?

Re: Bfing and TEETH!!!!!!

Id always let the inital shock sink in but then not 5 seconds later Id give a hug & kiss to make sure they knew it was ok and that mommy loves them then resume feeding. After a few times of removing the nipple and saying no they get it

Personally I find that gentler than taking her off and saying no. It never results in crying, just a look of confusion. Ahh what an imprecise science being a mother is, we never know what is "right" and just try to do the best we can!
