Anyone getting GRIEF for wanting to BF?

yes...despite this being #3, and the fact that I BF #2 for 2 months.....

MY GRANDMOTHER is wrinkling her nose and saying "how can you tie yourself down with BF?"

It's really upsetting to me.....

Wow, that is so archaic in thinking, no offense to your grandmother. Most people, if anything, frown upon not BFing. I guess that is part of the thinking from that generation of moms.... my grandmother is gone, but I suspect she would feel similarly.

Sorry!

It's funny you bring this up b/c my mom actaully said she was surprised that I was going to try BF and actually said it's going to hurt. I was like okaaaay. Usually my mom is pretty open minded and keeps opinions to herself so I was so surprised she said this.

ETA: My mom did not BF either of her babies and I think it was the "norm" for her era.

Nobody has said anything to me. My Mom BF 7 kids in the 60s and 70s when BF wasn't as common, she totally understands why I want to BF.

I agree with the PP; your baby, your boobs - who cares what other people think.

Re: Anyone getting GRIEF for wanting to BF?

Sort of. I think some people just have their own issues and they try to somehow make me feel bad about wanting to do it. A friend of ours DH said to my DH, "Why is she bothering? Doesn't she have any idea how hard it's going to be?". Ridiculous comment coming from someone whose wife has NEVER even tried with either of her kids.......ummmmmm, hello clueless.

Then my BIL is like, "Well that will be hard, you're always going to have to leave the room to feed the baby.". Ummmmm........no I won't. Don't get me wrong, I'm modest and not one to just whip out a boob for all to see but I'm not going to constantly be MIA because my baby needs to eat. I plan on using the nursing wraps I bought or a blanket so I can cover myself when feeding the baby but I'll be darned if anyone thinks I'm leaving the room because they are uncomfortable with me feeding my child.

I don't get it really, you would think most people would think BF'ing is the nurturing and natural thing to do but for the most part people get all weird and judgmental about it. My feeling is.......screw 'em!! I'm doing what's best for me and my baby and if you're uncomfortable with it then that's for YOU to deal with, NOT me. Chat Icon

that's terrible that she is saying that, IMO it's the best thing you can do for your baby and you should tell her so

Re: Anyone getting GRIEF for wanting to BF?

I'm not letting it affect my decision to try (DD never latched) because I am going to try.

It's funny b/c SHE was a nurse and my aunt BF all 5 of her girls in the 70's.

She said back in HER day, they discouraged BF and even bound the women around the boobs to dry them up and prevent engorging.Chat Icon

I get the opposite. Why aren't you going to BF? You are not even going to try again?

Mind your business people!!!!!!!! I am already raising a healthy 2 yr old!! I don't need your input on what I should feed my child.

With my DS, my mom could not believe that I pumped in front of DH... she said "isn't he repulsed by that?"

I have to chime in on this one. Before I had my DD, I never planned on bf'ing. So we had no pump to use.

Well, I had DD 7 weeks early and I wanted to pump so she would at least get that.

So my DH went to bru and BBB, by himself, while I was still in the hospital, and bought a breast pump for me.

His mom was laughing when they actually went to buy it, she thought he would be mortified. (he went the first time just to look and get prices, etc.)

He was so supportive of me pumping, it made it that much easier.

Same here.

No matter WHAT decisions you make about YOUR body and YOUR child, there is going to be someone who has a problem with it. If you let your baby sleep in a crib right away, someone will take issue with it, and if you co-sleep, someone else will take issue with it.

You cannot win, so just do w hats right for you.
