Anyone have a dog that....
has been diagnosed with OSTEOSARCOMA (it is a cancer usually found in the legs of larger breed dogs).
Our 2 1/2 year old rottie Emma was having pain in her leg for the last few months and we decided to take her in and get x-rays done, thinking that maybe it was hip problems, which this breed in known for. Well I was not prepared to hear that it could be cancer and we are waiting for her x-rays to be read by the Dr. and they are supposed to be calling us back today.
We are just so upset, she is just too young!!! I guess I am just looking to see if anyone has had any experiences with this type of cancer for any really and what the outcome was.
Thank you all for listening and for any help you might be able to offer!!
Here she is (OUR BABY):

Re: Anyone have a dog that....
Fortunately I have not but FM Prettypit03 she unfortunately has dealt with cancer but her dog is in remission.
She could maybe pass on some insight to the disease and possibly recommend the vet she sees.
Good luck with this, I'll keep your pup in my thoughts and prayers.

Re: Anyone have a dog that....
i don't have any experience with that particular type of cancer, but our rottie had lymphosarcoma (lymphoma) 2 1/2 yrs ago...
since there was no tumor our only option was chemo, which worked once (remission for 6-7 months) but not the second time
from what i understand cancer is not "curable" in animals as it is in humans, but they can go into remission for several years and live long lives.
if you are able to, i would HIGHLY recommend going to LIVS in Plainview... Dr. Bailey is one of the oncologists there and he was simply amazing

Re: Anyone have a dog that....
I'm so, so sorry
We recently lost our Boston to mast cell tumors (found in dogs with short snouts).
She went through chemo and live for a year 1/2 after it ended. She was fairly healthy up until the last month of her life (she had stage 3).
What stage is it? That can tell you a lot.
I will tell you though, if you go through chemo it will get expensive (it cost us about $3000 for 8 sessions - with blood work/meds).
It was worth it for any extra year with our girl though.
Best of luck and lots of for you and your baby.

Re: Anyone have a dog that....
If you'd like, there's a yahoo group that deal strictly with cancer in Rotties....this is a great group of people who can offer you ALL sorts of advice and medical information to help you along in this journey.
All you have to do is join yahoo (sign up for a free email account if you don't already have one) and you can read/post messages to the board. You can also search for any messages relating directly to the type of cancer your pup was diagnosed with.
I found this site when I had a rescue that came through my house diagnosed with lymphoma---it was very useful during the time he was with me. He's since moved on to live in a wonderful new home and is doing well.
Good luck! And healthy wishes to your pup!

Re: Anyone have a dog that....
My dog was dx'd with lymphoma 1.5 years ago. She was only 4 years old we did they first round of chemo that put her in remission. the first treatment was 6 months. about 4 months after she stopped treatment the lymph nodes were swollen again so we went for round two with a new protocol. She went back into remission we have one more treatment and then they stop until the nodes swell again. Its expensive the first round was really tough on her. This time she is doing much better.

Re: Anyone have a dog that....
My black lab had this type of cancer a few years ago. He was treated at Long Island Veterinary Specialists in Plainview (516) 501-1700 (it's right on the Service Rd.) and he was in remission for two 1/2 years. He was 7 1/2 when he was diagnosed....so he was much older. He had his leg removed and went through chemo treatment. If you would like any further info let me know. These doctors were amazing!

Re: Anyone have a dog that....
Oh- thank you so much for caring everyone. It is so nice to have some support
Well we went to a surgeon and specialist and he was unable to be 100% positive with the x-ray we had that is was the osteosarcoma, although watching her walk and feeling of her leg tells him it is, he didn't want to say it for sure, yet.
We go back the 15th for another round of x-rays, and since there will be a month between the sets he said he should see a big change if it is for sure. At that point we need to let him know what we decide to do.
1. we could do nothing and just spoil her rotten for the time she has left (about 3 months)
2. we could remove her hind leg, relieving her of the pain and spoil her rotten for what time she would have left (about 6 months)
3. we could remove her hind leg and give her chemo and he said she might have 13 months left with us.
Really we just don't know what to do and what is best for her. $$ shouldn't really be an issue but the leg and the chemo could cost us 4-5 thousand dollars and we still can't be sure that she would live a long and happy life with us. It is just so hard to make this kind of decision for her.
We really want to do what is best for her but it is hard to not think about what we want too........How do you make this choice?!?!?!?!?!

Honestly, at of all of these options, I would go with the first one. How much of a quality of life will the dog have if you remove her leg, just to give her a few more months. Then the chemo which I am sure, will not be good...again just to give her a few more months. I am sorry you are going through this and I would never want to make this decision...good luck to you!!
