? re: exercise/ ab exercises
Is it safe to do ab exercises in the first tri? I am about 4 weeks preg. I have been working out 5-6 days a week and see a trainer 2 days a week where we do a total body workout. I canceled the trainer last week when I found out I was preg. just to be safe. ( I still worked out on my own but I didn't do any abs) I don't want to tell the trainer I am pregnant yet. So is it ok to do abs? or can someone help me find an excuse to tell her why I can't do them?

They say it is okay in the 1st trimester and that its okay to continue with whatever your pre-pregnancy workout plan was but I opted out! I'm just paranoid though- all I do is walk now! No more lifting weights or abs for me-just not worth it.

I asked my doctor about this in the beginning, she said continue exercising but DO NOT do any sit ups or other abdominal type of workout. I would ask your doctor what they think. XOXOXO BOTB

Re: ? re: exercise/ ab exercises
Most things I have read say ab exercises in first trimester are ok, but I stopped as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I just felt more comfortable and didn't want the extra worry of "am i hurting the baby?" my stomach is gonna get big anyway...
I told my trainer as soon as I found out. I felt better that way and she was great..did extra research on good exercises for pregnant women at different stages. I also bought a heart rate monitor and we made sure my heart rate always stayed below 145.
I had to stop working out at 16 weeks, though, because of placenta previa.

This is exactly why I would tell my trainer if I were you. Ab exercises aren't the only issues.

I really don't want to tell anyone yet. Especially where I get trained b/c It is gossip central there! I personally don't want to tell anyone until 12 weeks. But my sessions are prepaid and I still want to work with them. Any ideas on excuses I can give them for not being able to do abs?

I personally think that this is something that your trainer NEEDS to know!! Make it a point that it needs to be kept a secret but he needs to know nonetheless!

My doctor said the same thing...absolutely no stomach workouts.

Re: ? re: exercise/ ab exercises
Your trainer should be a professional and should keep this a secret. He/she could probably get in a lot of trouble for gossiping about it when you told them for health reasons. But that said, if you are not going to tell, you could just say you are doing abs on your own and there are other body parts you want to focus on for now..legs, arms, butt, etc. Or, just take a break from the trainer until the 12 week point and work out on your own until then.

Agreed. your HR should be monitered with exercising. Trainers tend to push people to the max, which is not something you want to be doing right now. Denise Austin does some ab workouts in her pregnancy DVD, small amounts and oblique work. Im goign to get back into it now that im feeling like half a human again.

I agree as well. I understand not wanting to tell anyone until 12 weeks, but I think it is very important to tell your trainer. Your workout needs to be modified for your pregancy.

Re: ? re: exercise/ ab exercises
Unfortunately the place I go is not very professional. I get a great workout but they do like to gossip! This makes me nervous because a friend of mine is also friendly with them and she can't keep a secret for more than 10 seconds! I really control how intense the session is, I'm just trying to find a way to get around the abs. If it was a doctor or dentist or something I would def. tell them my situation but I can't in this situation

Well then I think you need to talk to you doctor about what you should do. Honestly, I think you are taking more of a risk by not telling your trainer than by holding out on the 12 week thing. Your HR cannot go above 140 which is not a very intense workout, and you can't lift any heavy weights.

Re: ? re: exercise/ ab exercises
I understand how you feel. I was in the same position at my gym. Very nosey, gossipy..so I decided to tell my trainer I wanted to focus on my upper body for awhile and that I would do abs on my own at home...he was cool..didn't suspect a thing.
Try it. Can't hurt.

Re: ? re: exercise/ ab exercises
I asked my doc. this question. I usually go to the gym 3 days a week. She said I can continue, no ab excercises, and very light weight lifting. Keep heart rate at 145.
