I don't think its that bad on your right side- They did ask me to stay on my left when they had trouble with my DD heartbeat during her delivery but I think just sleeping at night should be fine.

Blood flow is most optimal on the left side, however, the right is just fine as well.
Sleeping on your back squishes your internal organs.
You can't really control how you sleep- your body will tell you it's uncomfortable by making you shift.

One thing my OB told me is DON'T freak out if you wake up on your back. As one of the OP said, your body will tell you what's best. For right now, my sciatica dictates that I can sleep ONLY on my back, and that's how I'm most comfortable. Either side is fine, and your back is even ok up to 24 weeks, I hear

i was told that you can sleep on your back until about 20 weeks then to switc to your sides b/c you can squish organs or the baby the left side is better b/c it is said to increase blood flow

I switch from side to side all night. it's better to stay on your left, but I can't do it, everything goes numb!

Re: Im sure I should know this but I don't..
It reduces the blood flow to the vena cava. But as someone said, don't worry if you wake up on your back. Just turn onto your side.
