I've been prescribed Darvocet for my sciatic pain...

My OB swears up and down that for me, the benefit of NOT being in pain and under stress FAR outweighs the risk to the baby.

But I'm still scared out of my mind.

I know that this pain is potentially harmful to the baby--my blood pressure goes way up in the morning when I have to get out of bed and face the excruciating pain, and 50% of me is excited that maybe I'll be getting a comfortable nights' rest tonight...and the other 50% of me can't believe I'm actually going to take a risk with a baby I've fallen head over heels in love with.

I'm totally scared and freaked out... Chat Icon

I am sure your doctor would only give you this med if the risk was small. You really need to not be in pain!! Not to mention your BP!!

I am in a similar situation: I have had bronchitis for 3 weeks. Really bad cough that I believe has broken one of my ribs. I had taken 10 days of antibiotics and plain Robitussin, but to no avail. At my 28 week appt this past Monday, my OB said that I had to stop this cough or else my water was gonna break early!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Needless to say, last night, I was put on a course of steroids, another antibiotic and now have Robitussin with codeine. I am not happy with the risk to my Chat Icon but if I don't stop coughing, she'll be out before she's finished cooking!! Hang in there sweetie!! You are doing the right thing!

I know how you feel Beth. I've been taking Vicodin and Percocet the past few days and the only reassuring thing to me in that my little guy is still moving around like crazy.

FM me if you want to talk/vent. It seems like we're going through the same misery. Chat Icon

Beth, I am hoping that the darvocet provides you some relief! Your doctor would NOT prescribe it if it was harmful to your little Chat Icon !

I'm just so scared to take something that's labeled as a narcotic.

I would never forgive myself if something happened to this little girl... Chat Icon

No one can tell you whats best in this situation, you have to look inside yourself and really think about your decision and the pros and cons of each side. Good luck with your decision.

I agree..... and if you really are having second thoughts about taking this medication, you may want to ask your dr about alternative pain relief medications (non-narcotic) or pain relief methods (massage? accupuncture?).

It is true, though, that if you're enduring tons of pain, the stress on your system may affect the baby, so something should be done

I know how you feel. I have had problems breathing with this pregnancy and have had to use an inhaler. Using anything is never preferred but you are the baby's lifeline and if you are in pain and can't function, then the baby suffers. I figure if my inhaler helps me breathe, the baby gets its oxygen a-ok, and that outweighs any small chance of other negative side effects.

Unfortunately, I've already been there. You name it, I have tried it. Did 5 weeks of physical therapy and alllll the stretches that went along with it--it actually made the pain worse. Tried acupuncture a handful of times. Have been seeing a chiropractor 2x a week. It's just not getting better.

According to the orthopedist, I am most likely headed for back surgery as soon as the baby is born. Chat Icon
