Re: Feelings on Pit bulls
IMO, pit bulls are only mean if they're trained to be mean. Since they're larger, stronger dogs, people that adopt dogs for the purpose of fighting are going to choose pitbulls and treat them horribly and train them to be vicious. If you raise a pit bull from the time it is a puppy, it can be the sweetest dog you've ever encountered. Good luck!

Re: Feelings on Pit bulls
Any dog that is treated poorly and not trained correctly can become a 'bad' dog (bad being a dog that attacks people and/or other dogs). The reason (IMO) that pitbulls get such a bad rep, is that they are STRONG dogs with super strong jaws. So an abused pitbull who attacks a person can simply do alot more damage than an abused chihuahua/terrier/etc.

Re: Feelings on Pit bulls
You know what bothers me, is that you hear in the paper all the time about a Pit Bull attack or a Rottie. BUT never have i heard about a golden retriever attack, which i read somewhere are the #1 breed to attack someone, or a Lab, or a bulldog or any other dog for that matter. It's just sad how a Pits and Rotties and other dogs like that have such a bad rap. You see so many of them inshelters. I wish i could take them all home

Re: Feelings on Pit bulls
I'm torn - I LOVE all dogs. Especially big dogs.
But I personally don't think I'd ever be comfortable with any breed of that size and strength with small children. And I KNOW that is unfair to the dog, b/c ANY breed can be a wonderful, loving pet as long as it's raised and trained by responsible people, but if GOD forbid something ever happened and that pet snapped (Which ANY animal can do, I don't care HOW well trained they are) My 9 lb Yorkie can do a lot less damage than a 80 lb Pit Bull .......
And honestly, I trust my spoiled little Yorkie less than I trust my sister's BIL's ENORMOUS pit bull ........but that pit still has the strength to do a lot more damage to a small child -

Re: Feelings on Pit bulls
well to be honest, i always disliked pitbulls and it was just because of their reputation. my opinion has since changed...........my dad rescued a puppy from "bad parents" and rocky is the sweetest most loving buddy in the whole world! i love him to pieces. i strongly now believe it is all in the way they are raised and cared for. i also felt the same way about rottweillers and my spyro is 8 years old and he's just the biggest teddy bear in the world. Re: Feelings on Pit bulls
I agree with other posters that it's the owner. If you get a pit - or any other dog - you have to be devoted to training and lifelong care. Best of luck

Re: Feelings on Pit bulls
I was talking to my friend who's picture I posted (who has 2 purebreed pits) and this was HER response:
I don't trust ANY dog with a child.
You learn that with animals- they're just like people. They have mood swings- they may have an ear ache, tummy ache - you just don't know.
I would never leave James with Jiggs or Jewels by himself- that is not saying I don't trust THEM - that is saying that I don't trust JAMES.
He isn't old enough to understand what I've been teaching him from day one - that they have to have their own space.
I don't believe that people teach their children the correct way to be around a dog.
Look at what happened when jim and i went upstate- james knows to "do nice"- and he pats the dogs- but he was doing that to his aunt and uncle's miniature collie- and he snapped at James! Who would've thaought!?
Needless to say, Aunt Tam and Uncle Al were shocked as hell that he did that!

Re: Feelings on Pit bulls
I have two pit mixes...and they are great dogs! Pits are very loyal dogs...they will die to protect their family. They have a bad name, b/c people abuse this loyalty and use it for the wrong purposes. Such a shame. When people come to the house, they are actually more afraid of my German Shepard than the mutts... But all the dogs (i have 3) get along very well...one of the dogs is a pit/terrier mix, so she is the smallest at 37lbs...and she loves to play with the other two..especially the shepard! She played mommy to her when we brought her home!

Re: Feelings on Pit bulls
Me and my FH resccued our pit at a year old and she's THE BEST- so even if you dont get them as a puppy you can raise them with love to be great pets- they just get a bad rap- she is the biggest mush- loves ALL people and wants to play all the time! There are so many pits in shelters that just need a loving home - How could you be scared of my penny? look how cute she is.... Image Attachment(s):

Re: Feelings on Pit bulls
I have a 4lb chihuahua (Isabella) and a 60 lb pitbull (terror)- my pitbull is the nicer of the two I'm currently pregnant and we have no doubts of how Terror will be with the baby.
Terror is the most well behaved dog! She could be in full stride chasing a cat (that is the one thing I hate that she loves to do)but if my dh or I call her- she stops!
Terror can be eating and our chihuahua will go to eat out of her plate and she'll let her. Now when the rolls are switched and bellas eating and terror goes near her- bella starts grwoling and will snap at terror- our sweet terror will just walk away!
