Breastfeeding and Asthma
Maybe a dumb question but can I breastfeed if I take steroids for my asthma?

I have an appointment on Tuesday and will be asking this. In doing some research online, I found a study that was done in November 07 stating that baby's who were breastfed by mother's who have asthma had a significant decrease in air flow (asthma) when they got older. I wonder how much this study is recognized in the medical community.

Re: Breastfeeding and Asthma
well, as a researcher, I can tell you that one study seldom carries any real weight... only when there are multiple studies with the same conlcusion are the results really taken seriously....
this is mainly becuase in population studies, results can vary greatly according to the statistics they chose to use...
I should add that asthma is an immune disease.... and it's really hard to seperate genetics (an inherited immune problem that increases the risk of asthma) from a possible environmental cause (baby consuming breast milk from mom who is on medication that increases the baby's risk of asthma)....

In the social work/mental health field we use the same position (more than one study to really prove a case). But, still worth asking the dr. about.

Re: Breastfeeding and Asthma
oh definitely ask the Dr.... that's the only real guidance you can get on the situation....
They'll likely advise against breastfeeding if the steroids are known to be able to be passed through the milk.....

I just read something online that said that oral inhalers are safe, but oral steroids enter the breastmilk and are passed through the milk to the baby. Definately something I never considered! I have terrible asthma and I take steroids daily. I was even hospitalized for 5 days when I was about 6 months pregnant with an uncontrollable asthma attack. I will have to follow up.
