He is almost 5 months and mind u he had 3 months of colic too! I also think he is a couch potato he loves TV. He looks for it in every room, maybe he watches too much. I feel like a terrible mom.

Re: i'm done..very long vent

Why don't you try feeding him more when he wants it. All day long I feed the twins 4 oz but, before I put them down to sleep I give them 6 oz. I'm hoping it will help them sleep more. It does work.

Also have you tried to give him a bath & bottle right before bed? that soemtimes help to relax the child. JOhnson & Johnsons makes a "bedtime bath" soap. It's a lavendar soap that helps them relax. Maybe it will work. Heck its worth a shot.

Do you think he could be having a problem with the formula? Maybe it's giving him digestive issues and that's why he won't take more than a few oz?

Re: i'm done..very long vent

you are not a bad mom - we all struggle to understand and do the best for our kids.

I am going through something very similar with Talia right now, so I understand how you feel.

Is he on any solids?

I recommend the book happy baby, healthy sleeping habits - i am reading it now and it has given me a lot of insight.

Is he napping well??

I'm so sorry! My nephew was this way. You couldn't put him down or he would start wailing. He was miserable to watch and be around. The good news is, once he hit about 6 months old and could drag himself around (not quite crawling), he became a completely different baby. He was so frustrated not being about to get himself around that he made himself and everyone else miserable.

It will get better... I promise....Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: i'm done..very long vent

thanks girls

I don't thinkit's the formula he is on nutramigen and he has a little cereal in it for thickening purposes. (he had digestiveissues in the past) I haven't started him on solids yet because I am trying to figure out his schedule first and when it would be agood time. everything we do depends on his mood. Even his bath.

Napping I don't know, I guess he is. He usually stays awake for an hour or and hour and a half and then I put him in the swing or bounce him in the bouncer. If he is in swing he could sleep for 1 hour or two. If he is not in the swing he sleeps for about 30-40 minutes. I would say he takes 4-5hours of naps. However anything that happens after 6 pm is a suprise every night.

Is it normal forbabies to cry even before their eyes open when they wake up. I have never found him awake and not crying in the morning. And then when his eyes open he starts smiling and laughing! WIERD....

btw did i tell you how nosey he is. When he is eating he wants to look around. He checks out everything when he is in a new surrounding. Sometimes he scares me because his eyes move so quickly trying to see everything. And he gets frustrated with all his toys after about 10 minutes. Maybe he has ADD already! wow i'm on a roll today..my dh would kill me tellingeveryone about his fussy son. That's why I don't tell him about this site...

Re: i'm done..very long vent

aja - I have found when Talia cries - but her eyes are not open its one of two things -

1. she still wants to sleep - it might only be for 15 more minutes...but I pick her up and rock her to sleep until she wakes without crying.

or

2. She is gassy and the gas pains are waking her even though she isn't ready to get up.

I would ask your dr. about cereal - I think starting on solids might help put you on more of a routine.

Re: i'm done..very long vent

Have you considered letting him sleep in the swing? Sometimes that can help you get a good night sleep..worth a shot.

In some babies the cereal causes the problems..maybe it is not helping but hurting?

It could still be his formula..even on those super senstive ones.

Did the doctor check him for an ear infection? Those would make Molly scream...it was so sad.

Schedules..Molly put herself on a sorta schedule. We never had one written in stone and I never forced my schedule on her. She sorta just got into a groove but it took a good 3 months, maybe a bit longer. She still got up at night to eat until she was 5 months old or so. It was hard!! But it was her.

I know a friend had a very difficult baby and told me when she finally accepted that "this was the way her baby was going to be" it was easier. It was hard to hear the crying all the time and she DREADED bedtime to the point of putting it off longer and longer but after a while she sorta just felt that this was the way it was going to be for a while.

Not sure if any of this helps but I hope things get easier soon!

Feeding-
How often are you feeding him? Does he cry often & it seems like you're feeding him all of the time or is it every 2-3 hours?

Sleeping-
First you may want to not let him nap as much during the day OR it could be that he's overtired when you put him down & maybe he needs to go down earlier. I was missing the cues for sleep for my son and after reading the Baby Whisperer realized I was mistaking his fussiness for hunger rather than tired.

Crying- has he learned to modulate his cries yet or just goes full force crying?

schedule- the slave option never goes away especially when they're two. But for now, try to get into the habit of feeding him, playing with him & then putting him to sleep. (this was the method fromt he baby whisperer that I thought was very helpful).

CIO - while you have a legitimate reason for not letting him cry it out - most of us (me included) couldn't tolerate the CIO method without having any reason, so dont feel bad about this one.

And with all of the above, it may be what you have on your hands is a sensitive baby. He sounds very similar to my niece. She was very sensitive to sounds and was really tough for the first 5 months or so. I would strongly suggest getting The Baby Whisperer. It was amazing to me how they classified babies & explained how each type of baby reacts to different situations. I know it was my sister's saving grace..

Oh and if he is - you should know that my sister had a "touchy" baby first, followed by a textbook/angel baby next. So all is not lost.
It really does get easier. I would consider talkign to your pediatrician about the food thing. He could have digestion issues that could be the cause of most of this.

Also-and let me preface by saying I am not an expert. Could it be he is getting too much stimulation? Just from reading your post it sounds like you really are his slaves!
