Can I still sleep on my back?

This sciatica in my right leg is WICKED, and I only have two comfortable sleeping positions left--on my right side, and on my back.

When do I have to stop sleeping on my back? It's still comfortable for me right now, but I want to make sure I'm not hurting the baby in any way.

I'll be 14 weeks on Thursday.

Thanks as always Chat Icon

I still do sometimes and I am 24 weeks. I think they say after the 4th month to avoid lying on your back, but sometimes it is the only way I can sleep.

Re: Can I still sleep on my back?

I stopped sleeping on my back around week 14. I wanted to get in the habit of sleeping on my sides (which I hate by the way) before I got too big and it was an issue. I think you're okay for now, you will know when you need to stop. Your stomach, uterus, and baby will all feel big and being on your back just won't feel right anymore. Feel better!! Everything I've read says to start "practicing" sleeping on your sides at 15 weeks. So I've tried to avoid sleeping that way since that point.

Re: Can I still sleep on my back?

Have you invested in a good body pillow or a snoogle?

when my sciatica was really bad I would prop up my legs and sleep like that...

and even still with pillows all around me, I still find myself waking up on my back...I can't help it..obviously I'm unconscious ....I guess when my body is good and ready I'll stop sleeping on my back.Chat Icon

Re: Can I still sleep on my back?

If you are more comfortable on your back, don't stress yourself out. I would take a small pillow and put it under one side of your butt. I was told that as long as you are not flat-flat you are fine. A little pillow should do the trick.

The reason they tell you not to lay on your back is so that way your uterus does not lay on an artery and block blood-flow. I was told that if you WERE laying on your back and something was wrong, you would feel it or go numb to know that you should move.
