Question for all the dog owners
We have a Golden retriever that we got about 3 years ago from the Golden Retriever rescue foundation (www.ligrr.org) Anyway, Barney has a problem all of a sudden licking things...... He licks the rug, the furnature and our legs/feet. Do your dogs do this also? Why does he do it?
Thanks!

Re: Question for all the dog owners
hmm.... not sure why they lick things, but they say licking people is some sort of a way of showing dominance. Eventhough i sove some kisses. Maybe you can spray stuff with bitter apple.

Re: Question for all the dog owners
Our puggle does that too! I'll come home and find wet spots all over the couch and bed (where he lays while we're out) and sometimes he'll get fixated on licking the rug

Kasey licks EVERYTHING!!!!
I've never heard of it being about dominance, when they lick people they're showing affection. Like when we pet her, she licks us to show she likes it. Or if we're laying together, she'll lick us to say she's happy.

Re: Question for all the dog owners
Katie licks everything at least once. Walls, furniture. She constantly licks me, it's hard to type when she sits next to me. When DH gets out of the shower, there she is licking the water off his legs. Then she moves on to the shower door. She licks me good morning, good night and welcome home. Or even if I just smile at her, there she is tail wagging ready to give some licks. She's licked the key board, the monitor, the mouse the camera, the windows on my car, the cabinets in the kitchen. EVERYTHING!!!! We have a door mat that says: Beware dog can't hold its liquor

Re: Question for all the dog owners
I don't know but I can't STAND licking. We stopped them right when they started licking things, even their own paws and now they'll give a couple kisses when we say "Give mommy kisses" but they don't lick. My mother's dog licks uncontrollably like some PPs and it drives me nuts. The noise, the wetness, yuck. I would nip it in the bud right away, but that's just me. I just sternly said their names as soon as they would start licking and they'd stop.

Re: Question for all the dog owners
I have a Golden as well.
She only does this occasionally, and it only lasts for a couple of licks. It is usually the rug though. not furniture or anything
Feet and hands all the time, I think she is just being loving.
I do know that she does lick my daughter when my daughter is hurting her - for instance if my daughter steps on her feet or leans on her too hard - the tongue starts going.
Oh what - I do notice that during certain seasons, that she licks the air - her head is up and she is licking nothing We think it is post-nasal drip though

Re: Question for all the dog owners
another licker...sounds like to me its almost like an OCD. My parent's poodle who we had for 17 years and recently passed away in March constantly licked things.. the floor, the wall, a pillow, the couch, the blanket... EVERYTHING. He was kinda senile though, so I think thats why he was doing it. I cant remember what the vet said about it, but I think its sort of an OCD thing. Have you tried giving your dog a toy when you see him licking to put his mind onto something new? Maybe its boredom?
