after reading through the Baby Bargains Book, we registered for the:
Britax Roundabout for my car:
and for DH's car, we went for a less expensive one:
Evenflo Titan Deluxe Convertible Car Seat

Just keep in mind ladies that the Britax car seats are the most difficult to install in your car. So if you get a Britax, make sure you have a trained police officer to install it.

For my  we have the Peg-Perego Viaggio infant car seat that we use for now. I love it - plus I can use it with the Peg stroller. Later on, we will be using the Evenflo Triumph as this convertible seat.

I am registering for the Maxi Cosi Mico infant seat (very light!) and the Maxi Cosi converitble seat. They have good reviews and I like how they look

baby bargains book, consumer reports, amazon reviews, and then visiting the store to see them in person...
some carseats (ex. britax) can be too large for certain cars... so keep that in mind while shopping about....

we are getting the britax diplomat convertible car seat - the reviews say that it's smaller than the others so it's easier to fit into most cars.
we have the chicco cortina travel system as well, that car seat goes up to 30lbs.

We also got the Britax Roundabout...and the Britax Companion infant carseat.
Based this on Baby Bargains, word of mouth and testing seats ourselves.

Britax marathon for when he grows out of his infant seat.

I have the same! Chicco for now and Britax Marathon for later, Britax got amazing reviews on Consumer Reports and high marks in the Baby Bargains book too!
Good luck, it is overwhelming in the begining but you research so much you will be a pro in no time

Graco safeseat as infant seat... we have a Britax Marathon for convertible and an Evenflo Triumph Advance for convertible.

I have the Chicco Cortina system so that will be our primary carseat until the baby is 22lbs. Then we also registered for the Britax Roundabout.
