UPDATE!!! Cooper is going BALD!

At the ripe old age of 3 and a half, he's loosing his hair! And I don't mean that he's shedding... he's literally going bald and people are commenting on it left and right.

Is this something we should bring to the attention of our vet? Is there a special shampoo we should look into?

Just some background info on my bubby:

He's a Boston Terrier
He eats Holistic Select (it's the only thing that FINALLY agrees with his stomach)
He's on Prednizone and Prilosec for his stomach and skin (the Pred. helps both).
We shampoo him with special shampoo from the vet for dry and irritated skin.

UPDATE:
So, after we took Coop to our regular vet a few weeks ago about this and he was put on some meds but nothing changed, we took him to Dr. Panich, a veterinary dermatologist at the LI Veterinary Specialists in Plainview. Turns out, the prednisone that Cooper is taking for stomach issues is what is probably causing the hair loss. Also, pattern baldness is common in Boston Terriers (who knew?!?). She is also checking to make sure that he doesn't have hypothyroidism, which could be another cause of the baldness and skin irritation (which he's always had). Basically, the hair loss is most likely cosmetic and nothing serious (THANK GOD!). She said that melatonin (which we take to get a good night's sleep) stimulates hair growth in dogs, so we can do that if we want to replenish Cooper's coat.

I'm so thankful that it is nothing serious! (It's almost always something serious with him, so it's definitely a nice change of pace). I can't say enough great things about the staff at LIVS and Dr. Panich... it was our first time there and we were only there for about a half hour but they were great.

Re: Cooper is going BALD!

I would definitely mention something to the vet, that doesn't sound right to me.

It could be something as simple as he needs more oil/fats in his diet (I know this holds true for humans) or it could mean he's sick.

Re: Cooper is going BALD!

I have never heard of a dog going bald.
Very odd.
Something doesn't sound right to me either. Could it be allergies, mange or a thyroid condition ?
My dog Mia was loosing the hair on her side, it was allergies. We switched her food and give her omega 3 caps (called 3v caps) and it has grown back in.

Yeah, I learned that in WW. Sometimes when we cut out too much fat and oil it causes peoples hair to fall out.

Re: Cooper is going BALD!

It could be mange or alopecia (some dogs are prone to it)

Definitely check with your vet. They can do a quick skin scraping to see if it's mange, which is easily treatable.

Re: Cooper is going BALD!

Your dog has Demodec mange. Ivermectin and Lymp dip is the cure, your vet will do skin scraping but mites do not always show. Demodec manage is not contagious. Whether the scraping shows mites or not you should still do the Ivermectin shot, Lymp Dip has a very bad smell, like rotted eggs but it will cure him. You need to take him outside and spray him with the lymp dip or dip him outside..do not do inside. Also, wear rubber gloves as it stains your skin. Do not spray his face..sponge him on the face, neck, ears, forehead.

The Boston Terrier is listed among the breeds with familial predilection to demodectic mange.

The disease is divided two ways: It is divided into juvenile and adult onset mange and into localized and generalized mange. Approximately 10 % of Boston Terriers have demodec mange.

Re: Cooper is going BALD!

Question about mange.... Should the skin look irritated? Because it doesn't at all and he's not scratching. Thanks!

Here is a website that shows a picture. It seems there isn't always irritation.

He could go for a long time without redness etc. The first sign is hair loss and/or thining. There is an excellent dermotologist at LI Veterinary. Name is Dr. Panich. Go to their website and/or type her name on the search engine of web. She is rated #1 in NY.

Re: Cooper is going BALD!

Take him to the vet, you aren't going to get any really good information here as noone can see Cooper and know what is going on.
Please take him and have a scraping done....Chat Icon
