can someone go in depth about midwives?
I'd really like to know the ins and outs pros and cons of going to a midwife as opposed to an ob/gyn.
is there a dr. on premises? what if the baby is in distress? or there are complications?
can she give an epidural? episotomy?
i feel like i am so frightened of the deliverary that i need someone to really hold my hand and walk me through it all. maybe a midwife is the option for me?

All midwives have a back up doctor they work with. If there are any complications or concerns in your pregnancy they will send you to see their back-up doc.
All doc are available at your birth at the hospital also. So if baby was in distress or any complication a doc is immediately available if needed.
Just like a doctor calls in the anthesthiologist for the epidural so can a midwife. A midwife will only do an episiotomy if it is NEEDED otherwise they don't do them routinely.
A midwife will be with you every step of the way. You could also look into hiring a doula just for extra reassurance.
