I saw a raccoon ...
No, not in the supermarket or in Target, but I did see one walking across the field behind my house in the day light. Does that mean it is sick, and should I call someone?! I'm afraid to let my dog out.

Yes- usually it means they are sick.
We had that happen growing up occasionally. My mom called animal control or the police to let them know.

In general it's not a good thing. BUT..I had called, years ago, about a raccoon they was out during the day in our neighborhoood. Apararently it's not all that unusual in suburban areas so it's probably fine. But I would definitely put in a phone call.

Re: I saw a raccoon ...
It could be a number of things. It may have babies and as one raccoon rehabilitator told me "If you were stuck in a nest with 5 screaming newborns, you may want to take a break, too"
It could also mean that it's 'hiding spot' was disturbed by another animal or landscaper or it's den was flooded by the rain.
If it appears to be walking 'normal' it's probably fine. You can call STAR foundation, they have raccoon people on staff 631-696-5172. The volunteers at STAR told me that the police will just shoot them
Edited to add website (It lists another phone number there, but the 696 number is the one I have used) http://savetheanimalsrescue.org/

Thanks for that! I thought he looked like he was limping, but it was tall grass, I couldn't see too well.

A raccoon out in the daytime does not mean that it's sick. It's not the "norm" but it does happen. I grew up upstate, it happened all the time.
I have this conversation with DH all the time. He's scarred of raccoons (although he would be pizzed I told you all )

Yup, I saw them upstate all the time during the day too. I wouldn't worry unless he looked disoriented (we called once when one was stumbling around and walked into a dumpster).

Re: I saw a raccoon ...
OMG DH saw a baby raccoon across our back alley just this morning! It was on the roof of someone's garage and he saw it crawling down the wall.
Great now I'm going to panic whenever I am in the backyard with DS. I live in Queens...
One time we were in Middle Village cuz we had just had dinner at DH's sister's house and on our way home we saw a raccoon run across the street in front of our car.
