I think it might just be the first time in my life I'll abstain.

Please don't! At least vote for a third party...it's the only way we will get more and better choices! There are TONS of choices other than the two big parties.

I'm usually a third party voter, but I may vote Democrat this year.

I completely agree! (This is my first post). While I always prefer the dems to the gop, the only way that Americans can really be heard is through third parties. Parties that are not beholden to big corporations. Sad to say that both of the major parties are. But the Democrats will always be a better choice to the Republicans.

I can't imagine the second choice to either candidate being McCain.

You either believe in Democratic values or you don't.

I have posted about this kind of thing before in that I don't understand swing voters. the values of the two parties are so different, I can't imagine being divided between the two parties. IMO, whether you personally like the candidate, that is dwarfed by the issues of the party, especially seeing how much damage one party did to out country in 8 years.

I'm not a swing voter, at least I haven't been in the past, but if I'm forced to do it for this election, I seriously differ with your post.

I would never blindly vote democrat merely because a candidate is a democrat. The truth of the matter is, the differences are often so slight between candidates, even democrats and republicans, that you really have to research each and every candidate to determine where those slight differences lie.

There is such a huge variety of stances in each party - some republicans are fairly liberal while some democrats are fairly conservative, so that party lines often blur.

I am a proud democrat, but if my candidate of choice doesn't win the nominee, that doesn't mean I will happily vote for Obama, just because he is a democrat. And my decision doesn't lie in the fact that "personally dislike" the candidate - to make that assumption about each and every swing voter is taking a big presumptious leap.

In my particular case, I have serious, SERIOUS issues with Obama on his experience, and his foreign policy agenda. These issues are very important to me, so important that they would block me from blindly voting for him just because he falls within my traditional party lines.

Re: Democrats - if your choice of candidate does not win

Well I agree if you think the candidate for your party is awful and you can't vote for him/her with good conscience.

I don't see that effect personally with the 2 democratic candidates.

It depends on how you see things.

I cannot vote for someone who thinks this awful war is a good idea, or supports torture. It's important to me to have social programs and help the poor and middle class.

For me the issues are stacked SO much on the side of the Democrats, that I can't imagine one or two issues that would make me vote for a Republican. I'd sooner vote for a third party.

In this particular race the two candidates are so similar, I find it hard to believe that people wouldn't automatically put the support behind the other candidate, but for some people there are one or two issues that would swing it. For me, if one of the democrats supported the war, I would have a very hard time supporting that candidate.
