Re: Gas Prices & The Economy - what's your part?
I definitely have to say, i have noticed alot of cars on the roads lately, especially the weekends.
I ran an errand at Roosevelt field this week, granted some people had off, but it was PACKED not a parking spot i circled for 20 minutes.
The restaurants are also packed, we go out to eat alot, and anywhere we go, there is always a wait. It seems as though people are not ready to give up their lifestyles yet. Maybe they are charging everything...i duno
Right now the economy isn't effecting us, but thats not to say in the future it cant.

Re: Gas Prices & The Economy - what's your part?
Posted by MrsMerlot but what have you done with the increasing price of gas? I bought a PZEV (Partial Zero Emission Vehicle) - the Subaru is a bit larger than my Civic and it hurt paying $47 to fill up my tank...but I've driven 100 miles on a 1/4 tank. So while it's not a hybrid, it's pretty darn close...and I couldn't be happier.
Have you changed your spending habits in anyway? No...haven't felt the need to...we continue to live within our means while still enjoying a comfortable lifestyle.

Re: Gas Prices & The Economy - what's your part?
We live approx 1 mile from DH's job ... and about 15 minutes from mine.
When I work from home, DH takes my car instead of his SUV to work. He has rollerbladed to work, and is now talking about buying a bicycle.
When we run errands, we take my car instead of his -- unless we need his for the storage of transporting something large or bulky.
Our cars are older, mine is 10 years old, his is 9 years old. And they're paid off. They both run fine, we don't "need" newer cars at this point in our lives. And when we bought them, they were already 2 - 3 years old, they were pre-owned.
Other than our honeymoon or a quick weekend for an OOT wedding, we haven't taken a vacation in about 2 years.
I have never bought a purse that was more than $100. Ever. I don't buy expensive designer shoes. We don't buy designer clothing. We don't have flat screen tvs. I don't have an iPhone or a Blackberry Pearl, even though I drool over them. We don't go out for fancy expensive dinners ... even when we are celebrating an occasion, we go to moderately priced restaurants. We try not to order food in very often, and when we do its usually just a pizza. We don't drink coffee -- so no Starbucks to cut out.
We rent a small apartment (though hopefully we will buy a house in the next 6 months). I wash my clothes in cold water most of the time.
There is really very little that we can cut back on in our lives.
We don't really splurge on anything.

DH & I both work in the town we live in. We barely drive anywhere as it is.
I will be getting the tires fixed on my bike and try to do some errands that way. Otherwise we are being really careful food shopping and trying to save money!
I truly feel for those people who commute far. It must really hurt.

Re: Gas Prices & The Economy - what's your part?
I have a very lucrative second job so this really hasn't hit my family yet. Still spending like crazy on the house.
Last year we put up a 50k extension. This year it's 5k on a driveway + patio. Later this year might be a 10k hot tub.
And we have two SUVs. But at least it's only three miles to the train station for me. I'll start to worry when it gets to $5-6 a gallon.
I figured since everyone has to deal with it (not just me) it's not worth worrying over.
