Insurance Companies

I guess this is somewhat of a vent???

I called mine earlier today to let them know what is going on. They do not pay for ANYTHING related to infertility, whatsoever, NOTHING, ZERO, NADA.

They do however pay for birth control pills, abortions, late term abortions, and morning after pills.

There are no words....anger cannot even begin to describe....

I know what you mean. It's sad that we live in a society that covers preventing children from being conceived, and terminating pregnancies--- instead of a society that accepts all types of medical issues and would cover any meds/procedures to overcome those obstacles.

Me too. It's so frustrating! I had to come off of DH's insurance and go back on mine so that things would be covered. Can you do something like this?

WOW!! They pay for nothing at all??!! That is crazy. Luckily our insurance paid for everything but if we had to have done IVF we would've been capped at $10K/lifetime max. I think it's terrible that the insurance company would pay to terminate pregnancies but not help those people who want to bring a child into this world. That is such a shame. Isn't there a NY state mandate to pay for infertility coverage?

that's awful. I'm so sorry. You may be able to write it off on your taxes though. Can you call your accountant?

It won't help in the short term, but it could help in the long term.

Re: Insurance Companies

I thought IUI had to be covered in state mandate but not IVF. But, I guess it all depends on the plan (cheaper the plan the company gets the less is covered kind of thing). I'm our plan admin so I was looking into it when I found out IVF wasn't covered (we are SB and no one offers teh IVF rider to small bus).

I know they have to cover all tests to make the determination of the IF. I thought NY was one that had IUI mandated. Its so horrible.

With IVF I know some RE's get grant money and if your combined gross is $200k or below you can apply. I wonder if that works with IUI as well. But, I wonder if you can get some of the meds covered because some of the meds can be used for other things besides IUI/IVF. I know that is how they got my IVF meds in through my pharmacy plan.

This is not true. They do not have to cover diagonostic tests for IF. Mine old insurance actually did but are now refusing to pay. Every insurance company is different.

Not to start any drama....but if someone is clearly distressed over insurance not covering their IF needs...why would you post about how your insurance company does cover and how much and stuff. I dont think thats what the OP wanted to hear. I think its kind of insensitive of you.

But as previous poster said you can look into grants at your clinic, and I think there is still the INCIID scholarship or even being part of an IVF clinical trial - I was going to do one with Univ. of Penn and they covered everything except for some meds.

Good luck!

I'm not going to go back and forth but I will say that I was not being insensitive at all and I was offended by your post. I was just saying I was fortunate our insurance covered our needs and how terrible it was that hers did not. Clearly she was not offended as there was no intent to be mean or hurtful. I've been posting on the IF board for a long time, it's where I started because of my own IF issues before getting pregnant, and I am ALWAYS sensitive to the girls on the board and their posts and questions. You are making drama since you're the only one who commented and just so the ladies here know........I was also FM'ed by this poster and was told to "stay on the pregnancy board" which I found to be insensitive and rude and uncalled for. I've never had a problem with a single person on any board on LIFamilies before and I'm not about to start nor will I stop posting along with all the other people on this board who helped me to actually get to the pregnancy board. In the future you should think about what you say before typing it because if anyone was out of line or insensitive it surely was not me.

**EDIT** As I Fm'ed you too, just as an aside, I've been around LIFamilies for a long time and I've never had any negative FM or posts from anyone. I think it was a little ridiculous of you as someone who just joined the board and whose ONLY post was what you said above to be telling me to "stay on the pregnancy board". Again, I started on the IF board and am eternally grateful to all the help and advice I've received from everyone here and I would never intentionally be insensitive or say something to hurt any one of them since I was in their shoes at one point. As I said to you in my FM, perhaps it is you who should stay off the boards until you learn to post something of value as opposed to stirring up drama where there wasn't any. Enough said............this is not the forum for this fighting and I don't want to take up time with this when people here have real concerns and problems. I've said what I had to and I'm done.

Wow, I can't believe the drama that is happening in the past few days! I don't understand why someone would create a name to tell Kristen that she was being offensive. All this makes me start to think it is the same person doing all this.
Kristen has always been supportive and sensitive and it is crazy to suggest otherwise.

That aside, I think its TERRIBLE how so many insurance companies (and moreover the companies that supply the policies -i.e. who you work for) handles IF. There needs to be so much more education on what infertility encompasses and there needs to be an overhaul of the insurance industry on this topic.
There is a NYC law that says some IF treatment must be covered, but I am not sure of the details. There are also grants you can apply for for IVF as some of the other ladies mentioned.

Re: Insurance Companies

Hofstra - I responded to your FM. I appreciate your apology but it was not necessary. Chat Icon I understand where you are coming from/what you meant.

Once we get deeper into this, I am going to look into grants. I just never thought I would have to use my life savings and/or go into debt for something that comes so natural to most people. And to some undeserving people as well (drug addicts, etc)

When I spoke with the insurance company, the lady said that even if the urologist codes something on her paperwork to them with the WORD infertile in it, they will deny it. So he can get checked for cancer, or prostate, or whatever else it is that urologists do, but the minute infertility comes into play, its all out of our pocket.

We are under my insurance company and DH has the same insurance co so it would not make a difference to switch.

I appreciate the responses from everyone and I am going to look into all options/suggestions.

Thanks again and Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon to everyone.

Do you and your DH work for the same company?
I ask because even though you have same insurance carriers, the coverage from your companies can be different. Its really your company that sets what is covered and what is not, not the insurance company.

No we don't but its the same type of insurance (PPO) for the same insurance company. We were talking and we can't figure out a way DH can actually call them and find out what they cover without being a member under his company....

Too bad DH does not even have an HR person to go to. It's a very small company.

Just out of curiosity, is there some way the doctors could code the treatment under something else in order to get insurance to pay for it? I don't mean lie and cause insurance fraud of course but just kind of a way around the system so to speak? Keep us posted, hope everything works out!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Insurance Companies

So sorry. I have been there and done this. I cried on the phone with way too many insurance reps. Both DH and I are supposed to have "great" insurance, yet neither was willing to foot a bill for IF. We had to fight for them to even cover the HSG. It's truly heartbeaking. But, we had to move on and figure out what WE were going to do about it since fighting with them was not going to do anything. There are some options available if you look. There is the NYS grant if it's still available (it is renewed year to year) but you have to go to a clinic that particiapates. There are several on LI that do. There are also clinical studies you can take part in if yuo qualify and some pay for just your meds, others pay for the whole cycle. Ultimately, we financed our cycle using a 0% credit card that we paid off in a few months. I tried to look at it like another car payment, but I was getting so much more out of it. Best of luck to you, I'm sure you will be able to make it work for youChat Icon

DH is going to ask! YEA!!! Thanks!

About these grants do I need a RE to find out about them? Or how can I do it or can I do it on my own? Because we went straight from an OBGYN to a urologist. I had an HSG and bloodwork and I am fine - we are looking at MF.

Thanks sooo much for all of your help ladies. You have truly touched my heart today and made me feel better. I don't know what I would do without this board.

Mine paid 90% of the HSG. I have to pay $250! Nothing compared to what I am about to encounter $$$wise I presume....

But I am glad to see you are a success story with you!
