Godparents question
So my husband and i haven't decided on the godparents yet. I think we'll wait a bit before we do.
But my question is... if someone made you the godparents or godparent of their child, do they expect to be the godparent of your child? Would they be offended if they weren't?
Were you ever offended if you weren't chosen?

Re: Godparents question
My DH has two godsons and there is a chance that we won't choose either of their parents for our godparents.
We haven't finalized ours yet (we're down to two of each and need to decide) so we'll ask them after the baby is born.

Re: Godparents question
That's a hard one!! I don't think anyone should necessarily expect it just because they made you the godparents BUT I could see someone getting a little hurt despite that fact. Our choice was easy since my DH has 1 brother and I have 1 sister they were the obvious choice. Good luck, it's a hard decision to make.

Re: Godparents question
DH and I have 5 god children, so not everyone who named us Godparents will be a godparent to our children. I don't think anyone was upset and I know I wouldn't be upset if I chose someone to be DS's godparent and wasn't chosen to be their childs.

Re: Godparents question
I don't think they should expect to be godparents (though I agree that they may be hurt regardless).
I have another question -- We've decided that we'd like to have my brother and DH's sister. The problem is that DH's sister does not live in the U.S. and may not be here for the christening.
I would think that automatically rules her out as a possible godparent. What do you think?

Re: Godparents question
At least for catholics, I'm pretty certain the godparents must be witnesses to the baptism.....

We're Catholic and that's what I was thinking, but I heard something about sponsors for godparents that couldn't make it. Has anyone ever heard of those?
