Rocky Point Animal Hospital - Anyone ever use them?
We're looking for a new vet for Arnold and I was thinking of calling the Rocky Point Animal Hospital as they're in (very) close proximity of our house. Does anyone have any feedback regarding this place?
I'm not happy with our current vet. I got a call from Kent Animal Shelter saying all of Arnolds litter mates were diagnosed with mange. Now I've been telling our vet from DAY 1 that he's been scratching like a mad man and he's blown us off.
Well, yesterday, I took Arnie to the shelter (LONG story but we may be getting ANOTHER dog from there) and one of the girls in the adoption office looks at his legs and says he has it.
I was so pizzed, I knew there was something wrong, but they made me believe it was just me over reacting. I'm pizzed at myself too for not pressing the matter and having them do a skin scrape.
So now I'm looking into other vets and of couse I'd like to keep it local.
So if you have any info on this place or somewhere near here, please let me know.
Thanks!

I used Rocky point in the beginning when Otis was a puppy for the first 3 months and then switched. I didn't care for the vet there. Forgot the name he was a really tall guy.
we live in Miller Place but we go to who was recommened and who Otis loves
Dr Grecco or Dr. Perry Animal Medical Hospital of Centereach (631) 585-5353 2425 Middle Country Rd across from utopia
The staff and Drs are great and we love them too!!

Could you give any specifics as to why you didn't like them?
Also, there are two different vets in RP, have you ever dealt with the other one, Rocky Shores Vet (they're located right across the street from Kohl's on 25A)?

Re: Rocky Point Animal Hospital - Anyone ever use them?
First of all, demodectic is not contagious- many pups are born with it. SARCOPTIC mange is the contagious one. Depending on how severe this mange is on your pup, if it is just a fairly small area-TRY THIS-- don't go throwing your money away until you try this- believe me, it works, I gave my vet an education on this one! He later called me at home and after researching it, told me I was right- Twice daily, put 10% benzoyl peroxide (acne medication- YES, acne medication!) on your pup- you can dilute it a tad with water in a glass if you want, but not too much- either use an elizabethan collar to keep him away from the area, or something else, don't let him lick it- Make sure it is straight benzoyl peroxide- I used Persa Gel from Johnson and Johnson, and within THREE days, (no joke) teeny hairs were growing back- keep putting it on until it goes away! my dog developed this immediately after receiving all his vaccinations, as his immune system was stressed- I also changed his diet to Merrick, and bought Lipiderm (vitamins) to beef up his immune system- I could have saved myself the over $200 bill (with pills and ointments that did nothing) from my vet if I would have just followed my gut on this one in the beginning!

It's the demodectic type thankfully. Now what would you consider a "small" area?
At this point, he has two hot spots (very small but noticable to the naked eye) on his back and unfortunately all along the backs of his hind legs and inner thigh. It seems like a good amount to me.
What do you think?

If it was my pup, I would give it a go- but you need to keep him away from it so the gel can do his job- do you have one of those elizabethan things or something similar? I would try it for a week- supposedly it only works for a localized area, and my pup only had a little dot above his eye, but it was starting to spread- within 1 week it stopped it- The vet gave me some cream and benadryl when I first took him, and it did nothing. Then, I brought my pup back, and he told me keep using the cream, and if it doesn't work, he would have to do the Mitaban dips- I was determined NOT to use mitaban, and did research, research, research- I had some acne cream at home, beefed up his immune system (demodectic is an immune system disorder) with great dog food and the vitamins I mentioned)-- I say try it for a week- it will definitely work on his spots on his back- give it one week, make sure you really cover all the skin with the acne gel- if you don't see an improvement, please go to DR WEN in Eastport- he may have an alternative remedy to Mitaban- the man is a Miracle Worker, and I am sure many of you on this board have heard of him, and he is actually much cheaper than my vet and worth the trip!

Gina - Why are you so against Mitaban? I've never heard of it, so I'm genuinely curious. I'm also not familiar at all with mange as none of my other dogs have ever had it.
Thank you for the advice, I will definitely keep it in mind.

Also, if I remember correctly, the shelter said the pups who were reported as having this (which was all of them) were being treated with Ivermectin and responding well.
Does that sound familiar?

So sorry, I forgot these were puppies! I wouldn't think you could do a Mitaban dip on a pup- Ivermectin is the ingredient in heartworm pills, and is used also to treat mange- Go with your gut, Jennie, do what you think you should- if it is very generalized as opposed to localized, you may have to seek veterinary attention. I hope whatever treatment you choose, it works for your pup- please keep us posted!

I don't know how far you're willing to travel Jenn, but I love our vet - they are in Port Jeff.

I was going to go there and I should have. I didn't like this new vet AT ALL.
He had TERRIBLE bedside manner and I just didn't like him or the place. They were more expensive than my original vet and the place was a DUMP.
I should have left but I didn't. So at this point I will do the treatment as perscribed and follow through with them for this mange thing and then we're off to the Port Jeff place - where I SHOULD have taken Arnold to begin with.
Man I could KICK myself!

no not that one the one across from the elem school. I didn't like how he handled Otis when he was a pup and I didn't get a great vibe from there

Don't worry! You tried the place and you didn't like it, I'm sure there is no harm done! You'll love Jefferson Animal Hospital! And so will Arnold!

Ugh!!! That IS the place I went to last night!!
Now I totally know why you don't go there.
They were a definite no-go for me.
